Where could you be spending Christmas?

A quick look at Christmas celebrations around the world. Why not start planning your December 2019 adventure now?!
Home to Father Christmas, there’s more to a traditional Finnish Christmas than Saint Nick and the presents he brings. White landscapes lit by stars and ice lanterns set the mood for a cosy festive season. The Finns celebrate with carols and at the close of Christmas Eve families head to the sauna. Sounds like a great plan to us!
You won’t need your mittens here. An Australian Christmas is all about outdoor dining, bare feet and summer warmth. Expect picnics, carols on the beach and a BBQ instead of roast turkey! If Christmas turns you into a little kid again, you can even open your presents a whole 11 hours ahead of everyone at home, thanks to the time difference!
With temperatures hovering around 29C, bath-like sea water and 8 hours of sunshine a day, December is one of the best months to visit this lush Indian Ocean island. Swap satsumas for mangoes and pineapples and instead of holly, enjoy the colourful flame trees. Spend Christmas day on a palm-fringed beach or snorkelling in aquamarine seas.
Cape Town enjoys balmy temperatures of around 24C in December but the festive lights and evening carol concerts make this a wonderfully atmospheric destination for a Christmas break. Join the locals at a Christmas Day ‘braai’, similar to a BBQ. Round things off with a safari adventure at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, just 3 hours away.
Swap cold winter days for long hot days filled with sunshine in beautiful Thailand with its superb beaches, delicious cuisine and fascinating culture. As a Buddhist country Christmas isn't a religious festival, but that doesn’t stop everyone putting up Christmas trees, exchanging gifts and sharing a meal – although it’s usually a Thai curry! Yum!
Costa Rica's dry season starts in December, so it's a great time to visit and they certainly know how to celebrate the festive season. Houses are decorated with tropical flowers, nativity scenes, and Christmas wreaths made of cypress branches and berries. Expect rum punch, midnight mass on Christmas Eve, with fiestas rolling into January.
From tree lighting ceremonies to magical window displays, ice-skating to Macy's Santaland, there are endless magical things to do at Christmas. Don't miss the displays at the Rockefeller Center and, of course, no trip would be complete without a little retail therapy! Find yourself a fantastic all-American diner for Boxing Day breakfast and you have the perfect winter break.
For a sunny Christmas adventure head to Sri Lanka where December temperatures hover around 30C. Although most of the locals are Buddhist, Christmas is celebrated as a public holiday with decorated streets, Christmas trees and festive dinners served at hotels. The fun starts early with firecrackers at dawn on the 1st December.
