July 2019

Let the summer holidays commence! We've had a busy month or so sending out some amazing travel packs for clients travelling soon and what intrepid, exciting holidays they are! We wish we could sneak into your suitcases!

If you follow us on Insta, you'll know that June was a rather fabulous month! In the name of work (ahem), Sara and Amy headed off to Madikwe to see some new lodges and re-visit a few long-standing favourites as part of a Big 5 malaria-free safari, topped off with a little family sojourn in Mauritius for Amy, lucky thing! Meanwhile Abi and Lops explored South East Thailand with Tabitha and Imy, age 9 in tow! Let us tell you - no-one is a tougher critic of beaches and pools than these two! So, for July's newsletter what better than to share with you our experiences and some of the new hotels and lodges we know you will love!

Madikwe - for a Big 5 malaria-free safari

Madikwe is the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa but still relatively unknown. Covering 750 km², it’s one of the best conservation areas in Africa, offering all the major species, including lion, leopards, elephants, Cape buffaloes, white and black rhinos along with almost all the plains antelope species. The best bit is it's malaria-free and some lodges offer private-use game vehicles, opening up the safari experience to even the smallest explorers!

Quick facts:
Fly into: Johannesburg and rest your head at the uber relaxing The Peech hotel.
Transfer time: 1 hour by air, 4-5 hours by road
Kids on safari: amazing kids programmes aside, most lodges will let children aged 5+ join game-drives. If you're travelling with under 5s, talk to us - there are options for private game-drive vehicles, kiddie bumbles and great lodge based child-minding

Where to stay
Starbed Suite anyone? Stay at Jaci's Safari Lodge for an out-of-this-world, under-the-stars stay that will be imprinted in your memory for ever more
Want to be in the thick of things: stay at Impodimo, on the animal highway, but unfenced! Don't worry, your trusty ranger has your back at all times!
Under canvas? Thakadu River Camp has some great family tents for that authentic experience and is community owned and run.
The best seat in the house? Surely, overlooking the frankly jaw-dropping waterhole at The Royal Madikwe!
Undercover game-viewing? Visit the incredible hide at Tuningi. We spotted leopard. Just saying.
South-East Thailand - for beach and culture

Ah Thailand, beloved of our back-packing days! Well the love affair continues; this vast country offers a plethora of attractions for families. Over the last year the Bushbaby team have travelled north, south, east and west so there isn't a corner that's escaped our attention. June saw Lops and Abi heading south-east to Koh Samui and Koh Phangnan. Both are great options for our summer months and frequently offer better value than 2 weeks in Europe we find! Think beach hideaways far off the tourist trail, powder-soft sand, warm turquoise seas, complimentary water sports and quirky Thai-style kids activities, for that perfect mix of local culture and fun.
Fast facts:
Fly into: Bangkok; stay at the Anantara Riverside and spend a couple of days exploring this crazy, exciting city.
Transfer time: The flight to Koh Samui is just an hour. With easy 30-60 minute speed boat transfers to Koh Phangan it's worthwhile combining the two!
Island Kids: Many resorts offer Kid's Clubs with activities such as tie-dye, Thai boxing, cookery lessons and 'cinema under the stars' with a full screen set up on the beach. Teens love the complimentary (non-motorised) water sports and it's easy enough for older ones to explore and dip into that 'rite-of-passage' party scene.

Where to stay:
Easy blissed-out resort stay: It's got to be Santiburi, Koh Samui. Just 25 minutes from the airport, you'll be cocktail in hand before you know it.
Jungle hideaway: For a tranquil, tropical hideaway with a big heart The Tongsai Bay gets our vote. Think charming hillside villas with spectacular views over the bay.
Best for teens: Anantara Bophut, Koh Samui - a lovely boutique beach resort, just a 5 minute amble to Bophut Fisherman's Village, which comes alive in the evening with a night market, street food stalls and beach bars.
Ultimate 'dreams really do come true' beach stay: Well the Anantara Rasananda, Koh Phangan of course. Utterly enchanting. GO!.
