November 2018

Rudyard Kipling famously said '“One cannot resist the lure of Africa” and we couldn't agree more, so this month we take you on a whistle-stop armchair tour. There's a lot to cover - not least Zimbabwe - the latest addition to our Africa portfolio but no newcomer to the safari scene and the perfect example of a destination that combines really well with its neighbours to give you a holiday full of contrast and different experiences. Read our blogs below for the latest on Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe which Abi and Amy have both visited this year. If Kenya appeals, keep an eye on our Insta feed as Abi will be flying out there next Wednesday!

If a safari is on your 2019 travel list, it's a great time to book for travel during the dry season May to September. Just saying.

When to go
Whatever your travel window there's a destination to fit; for the Great Migration head to Tanzania June-October; for whale-watching in the Cape our summer is the perfect time to visit; the Kalahari is great for February half-term and July-August offers prime wildlife-viewing, rafting and canoeing on the Zambezi.
Community-based tourism at its best
Our wonderful partners in Zimbabwe are Imvelo Safaris. With their passion for native wildlife and local communities, they offer a unique and unforgettable safari experience in their luxury lodges that directly benefits local people and wildlife as well as guests.

Botswana
For game-viewing by mokoro in a pristine eco-system

If you’re looking for an exclusive safari experience unlike any other Botswana with its authentic lodges, outstanding guiding and diversity of wildlife is for you. Best suited to families with teens, we recommend a stay at Delta Camp in the Okavango Delta where all ages can head out on a walking safari or game-view by mokoro (dug out canoe). With children under 16 sharing free year-round, prices start from £780 rising to £1,390 per night for a family of 4 all-inclusive.in peak season.
Namibia
For scenery and self-drive desert adventure

Namibia lends itself to self-drive so if road-trips are your thing, you'll be richly rewarded with Sossusvlei desert dunes, Etosha watering holes, Swakopmund sundowners and the epic Skeleton Coast. Expect stunning vistas, chance encounters with desert-adapted wildlife, dinner under a stellar night sky and plenty of adrenalin-fuelled fun should you wish. Our 10 day self-drive Namibian adventure starts from £1,980 per adult, including flights and car hire.
South Africa
For a malaria-free, first-time safari and Cape adventure

The first holiday we sold, over 14 years ago, was to South Africa and it will forever have a special place in our heart. Perfect for all ages as a first foray into this great continent, we recommend a scenic 10-day/ 9-night wildlife extravaganza with whale-watching in the Cape and Big 5 game-viewing. Enjoy 3 nights in Cape Town, 3 nights safari at Ant's Nest plus 3 nights at Thakadu River Camp for £3,150 per adult and £1,590 per child (under 12 years sharing), self-drive including flights. Prepare to feast as it's a real treat for those who appreciate fine wines and top-notch food!
Tanzania
For the Great Migration & game-rich Ngorongoro Crater

For a 'Just Us' break without the children Tanzania should definitely make your short-list. Featuring on many a bucket list is The Great Migration - one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world, when almost 2 million wildebeest and zebra follow the annual rains in search of prime grazing in the Serengeti. Combine with tropical beach time on the romantic 'spice island' of Zanzibar for the ultimate treat. From £4,550 per adult for 12 nights including flights.
Zambia
For walking safaris and unique water-based activities

Whilst Victoria Falls and its adrenaline-fuelled activities might be considered the main attraction, a safari is no mere add on. Combine a stay in South Luangwa, famed for its walking safaris, with the stunning Lower Zambezi National Park where you can spot hippo and crocs from a canoe or catch a mighty tiger fish. Prices from £3,700 per adult, including flights, based on a 10 night adventure.
Zimbabwe
For great value, authentic off-the-beaten-track safaris

With rates reflecting its re-emergence on the safari scene Zimbabwe offers great value. For families with teens Amy, our Africa specialist, suggests a thrilling 10 day/ 9 night safari with elephant encounters at Nehimba Lodge and game-viewing in Hwange National Park where you can enjoy riding and walking-safaris, game-drives and hide-viewing. Round things off with a ride on the Elephant Express to Victoria Falls and the fabulous Zambezi Sands. From £3,500 per person including flights.
