European Social Dialogue discussed with DG Employment

The European Sectoral Social dialogue was the main subject of the meeting between EBC and David Dion, Head of Unit in DG Employment.
The Commission launched a study three years ago to evaluate the real representativeness of the European social partners in construction. The focal point of the meeting was the outcome of this study, which should have an impact on the current situation.

Cooperation on a green mortgage initiative and energy efficiency

The Secretary Generals of the European Mortgage Federation – European Covered Bond Council (EMF-ECBC), Luca Bertalot, and of EBC, Riccardo Viaggi, met for the first time to talk about financing energy efficiency.
The EMF-ECBC is currently developing a green mortgage initiative. The idea would be to explore the potential of an “energy efficiency label” for mortgages used to finance energy efficiency works in residential units.

The new year started off with very positive news for the European Builders Confederation EBC. With three new members and the new role of the EBC President Patrick Liébus in the European Economic and Social Committee, construction SMEs enlarge their representativeness in Brussels.

Improving risk management with TOSCA

Many companies think Health & Safety is a separate activity from the rest of the processes. This is not the case. Weaknesses in the organisational aspects of the company contribute to significant losses and major industrial accidents.
The TOSCA project develops a methodology to integrate industrial operations into a comprehensive performance management system. This would address safety, quality and productivity issues in an integrated way during the life-cycle of a project or a product.
The tools developed by TOSCA were presented during the final conference in Brussels on 22 January.

New standardisation experts to follow energy performance of buildings and BIM

Small Business Standards SBS appointed 52 experts in the relevant CEN, CENELEC, ISO and IEC Technical Committees to follow standardisation and represent SMEs’ needs – which are often neglected in this field. Two of the 18 SBS construction-sector experts are from EBC. As from 2016 construction SMEs will therefore have more voice in the standard making system.

EBC presents a project under Erasmus +

Following up on its focus on apprenticeship, EBC presented a project under ERASMUS+. The project is titled “Support for small and medium sized enterprises engaging in apprenticeships: BUILDING APPRENTICESHIP”. The Commission should inform the applicants about the approval of the project in May 2016.
