IDC Releases Annual Report

It is vital that civil society is strengthened to enable increased advocacy on this issue, and to create a greater motivation for States to respond to the damaging effects of immigration detention on refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons and migrants.

The IDC has been fortunate to stand with and support civil society in this important work, and we are thankful to be part of it.

Anna Gallagher
Former President of the Governance and Finance Board, 2012-2018

Grant Mitchell
Former Executive Director, 2009-2018

In 2018, Anna Gallagher retired from her role as President of the IDC Board after 10 years of dedicated service. Grant Mitchell also retired last year after 9 years of service as the Founding Director. 
In June 2018, the IDC Governance Board and Staff welcomed Alice Nah as the newly appointed President of the Board, and Jerome Phelps as the new Executive Director of the IDC.

Stakeholder session on implementing alternatives in Mexico. July 2017.
Reports that evaluate implementation of the Brazil Plan of Action
IDC collaborated with partners to develop both a Regional Report and national level Report on Mexico to evaluate implementation of the Brazil Plan of Action in its first three years. Both reports contributed to government dialogue and the creation of a 100 point list highlighting positive practices and experiences from the region, which contributed to the Global Compact for Refugees.

Consultation regarding the Inter-American Principles
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) invites Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS), civil society, and other non-state actors to participate in the Consultation regarding the Inter-American Principles on the human rights of migrants, refugees and other persons in the context of mixed migration movements. Answers to the questionnaire may be sent until February 18th, 2018.

Advocacy Coordinator Silvia Gómez on the Global Compact
IDC Director Jerome Phelps and IDC Global Advocacy Coordinator Silvia Gómez attended the signing of the Global Compact on Migration in Marrakech last week. It was signed in December 2018 by 164 States, after 18 months of negotiation.

In the aftermath of the sign-off, Silvia, who was involved in the negotiations throughout, discusses her impression of the Compact process and what happens next.
