• FPN National Conference, Manchester, Saturday 21st May 2016
Following a lively FPN meeting in Manchester in November, we have decided to hold our national conference there. Fiona Goldman and Ian Parker have now booked the main hall of Friends Meeting House in the centre of Manchester
for May 21st.
Our January meeting will be mainly given over to planning the conference. So far, we are thinking of a meeting that gathers together therapists and people service user/survivor/community/claimant groups to talk about ideas and action around psypolitics. The agenda is still wide open, so please come along to the meeting on 23rd Jan with ideas for a programme.
Andy Metcalf and his partner, Nina, have decided to host a fundraising event for the conference on the evening of Saturday 23rd April, in London N8 - to include dinner and a blind auction of art by local artists. More on this later.
• Local FPN group meetings
We have now had four successful meetings around the country with people interested in FPN - in Cambridge, East Midlands, Newcastle and Manchester. Notes from the Newcastle meeting can be found here, and from the Loughborough meeting here.
We'll see how things develop for each group.
We are planning meetings in Bristol and Totnes in the New Year - both have therapists expressing an interest in a local group..
• Supervisors List
We are still in the process of starting a list of therapists who can offer free supervision to FPN colleagues. Please get in touch with us if you can offer this.
• Website editorial group
We now have a small group of members to look after and develop the website, commission pieces for posting, and make suggestions for how we publicise the network. Sham Selvaratnam, Daniela Hecht and Paul Atkinson met online earlier this month. Some notes here.
Isobel Urquhart and Effie Lunn couldn't make the meeting.
- Founding Conference of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Union (PCU) on Saturday 6th February, 2016. "The PCU emerged from The Big Issue(s) day event in September, which provided a space where we discussed many of the problematic and unacceptable aspects of the institutions and structures of therapy in the UK. Many people present agreed that there was a need for a Union, and both on the day and subsequently a number of practitioners have signed up as supporters and made a financial contribution to help us organise." Conference flyer here.
- Mental Health Resistance Network/Alliance for Counselling and Psychotherapy campaigning conference against the DWP's Welfare-to-Work policies. Saturday 5th March, 2016 Bermondsey, London.
A meeting for therapists, service user and claimant campaigners to organise actions in response to the growing onslaught of coercive return-to-work programmes from the Dept of Work and Pensions, including 'treatment courses' of online and face-to-face psychological therapy, counselling and 'well-being' support.
Details of the conference will be posted soon.
Hope to see you on 23rd January,
and all good wishes for the New Year,
