Your Tara-Leeway Heights Civic Association sent you a notice February 8 to look out for a survey that aims to give each of you a voice in choosing a name for our terrific new neighborhood school in Westover. This notice transmits that survey, and explains how a committee including TLHCA members chose the five suggested names. Please fill it out in timely fashion and submit it according to instructions to APS.
A new Arlington Public Schools (APS) elementary school is being built at the Reed site next to the Westover Library that will open for students in August 2021. This new elementary school will serve a maximum number of 725 students in grades pre-K through grade five. An estimated 94% of students from the McKinley Elementary will attend this school with an estimated 6% of students from Tuckahoe elementary attending this school at the start of next school year.
APS has formed a Naming Committee to recommended names for the new building in accordance with APS naming criteria, as required by School Board Policy F-6.1 Naming of Facilities. The Naming Committee gathered ideas and received a number of responses from the communities they represent. The purpose of this questionnaire is to collect community feedback about the five proposed names the committee selected. All survey results will be reviewed by the Naming Committee prior to making a recommendation to the APS School Board. The Committee will make two recommendations to the School Board; a primary and an alternate name.
