Pure religion is this: To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction...  James 1.27

School Break Activities

While the children were out of school until early January, they completed several community service projects with Pastor Dave, sold extra eggs from our farm, picked fruit, baked cookies and of course, played lots of soccer. They also enjoyed a trip to the zoo and a fireworks show. The cooks planned a few special picnics, and on several days we moved the tables outside for lunch and had dinner by the bonfire. It was a great time of fun for everyone with the start of school right around the corner.

Christmas Eve Dinner

Christmas Eve was a special night at the home. The children dressed up for a traditional tamale dinner and received one small present; we open the main presents on New Year's Eve. As they eagerly awaited the midnight fireworks, we had lots of fun playing soccer, hide and go seek and watching movies. It was worth the wait as the whole town set off fireworks to celebrate.

Moving Up!

Edmar is one of many at Agua Viva who switched houses last month to be with children of roughly the same age. He says he is going to miss being with his little brother, Cristofer, and sister, Anai, in Casa Samuel, but feels grown up now with the big boys in Casa David. He likes not having to take naps and instead prefers having additional responsibilities and chores. Edmar is especially happy that his 2 friends, Gerber and Enrique have moved up with him!

Scholarship Stories: Alejandro

Alejandro lives with his mother and four siblings in a small home near Agua Viva. His mother was only able to finish third grade. Knowing how hard it can be to get a job, she has made education a priority for her children. Alejandro is very intelligent and likes to read and play chess. He has big dreams and hopes to study electronics in high school and later robotics in college. Would you like to help young people like Alejandro with the financial support he and his family need to attend Agua Viva School? If so, please contact Misi Schlax for more information about our Agua Viva Scholarship Program.

Partnering With Our School

For the second year in a row, the Agua Viva School was blessed to receive a donation from First Assembly Christian School (FACS) in Memphis. According to Denise Gray, a teacher at FACS, "We hope this gift will be a testimony to the faithfulness of God's hand to supply each recipient's needs 'according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus'." Guatemala Children's Mission board member Tim Sheehy visited FACS to share a message about the Great Commission and to receive a large check from the school.

Mission Team Report

Once again two small but mighty Kansas and South Carolina teams came together for a week to help celebrate Quinceañeras and make memories with the children. Our theme for the week was "God is light and in Him there is no darkness". We played glow games, did crafts, and even had a "Truth or consequences" night where lots of crackers and pudding cups were devoured. Cakes were baked and decorated for Sucely, Brenda and Delia's celebrations and the comedor was transformed with balloons, streamers and a pine-needle walkway to honor the girls. There were many special moments with the children, but I think my favorite was taking the boys from Casa David into the Colonia and buying ice cream and kites. Thanks to everyone at Agua Viva for once again welcoming us and making us feel like family.
