Potters Fields Park

August Newsletter

Welcome to our third quarterly newsletter of 2015. It has been an busy few months on the park and we have lots of updates for you. The summer sun has brought out all of our flowering beds and our bee hives have been busier than ever. Our new Holm Oak tree is starting to establish itself and we're pleased to welcome back the Tulip tree by our Gardener's compound.
New park border with One Tower Bridge
The hoarding fence line in front of the One Tower Bridge development has now moved further into the park and this is to accommodate the final building work to finish the new border. Once this is finished we will have a much bigger back lawn and the back path will have moved right up against One Tower Bridge. We expect this work to be complete by the beginning of October 2015 and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

New park bins
We have now installed six 'Big Belly' bins on site to replace the majority of the old bins. These new 'smart' bins compact the waste so they can take 7 times the amount of litter and also email our gardeners when they are full. This is great as it means fewer checks and empties so more time can be spent gardening. They are also solar powered and proven to reduce street bin collections by an average 86% which is great for the environment . We hope you like them as much Albert does.
Meet the Park and Events Manager
Jon Tighe has now been appointed as the Park and Events Manager for Potters Fields Park Management Trust. Jon comes to us from the Greater London Authority where he looked after the events and infrastructure on Trafalgar Square and at City Hall. Before that he worked for the charities 'Action for Children' and 'Battersea Dogs & Cats Home'.

It is a really exciting time for the Trust and Jon has lots of new ideas. Please do say hi if you see him on the park or get in touch on if you would like to share your own ideas.
Gardening tips for August
  • Watering - August is usually hot so remember to keep all your plants watered, especially your pots which dry out quicker. This is best in the early morning or late evening to avoid evaporation.
  • Weeding - little and often is the key here. With all the sun and watering weeds are going to pop up all over the place
  • Bulbs - it's time to start planting your autumn flowering bulbs and even some spring ones such as tulips and daffodils
  • Lawns - if you have a lawn it's now due its summer feed
  • Potatoes for Christmas dinner? - now is the time to get your potatoes in the ground or tub if you want them for Christmas dinner
  • Dead heading - Deadhead your faded flowers to encourage more. This will also prolong the flowering period
  • Indoor plants - these really benefit from being placed outside during the summer months so get them out in the garden or balcony if possible
  • Sweet peas - keep up the picking to encourage more flowers
