March 2019

Dear DOT Garden Friends,

Spring is here and the hustle and bustle of planting and greenhouse work is in full effect. It’s always a treat to watch the garden come back to life after the slumber of winter. Plus, we’ve been blessed with a bounty of attendees at our spring WaterSmart Workshops – thanks to all of you for keeping the momentum growing! We’ll be adding registration for the summer classes so keep an eye out for that change.

March seems to get everyone’s green thumbs itchin’ to play in the dirt. Interested in lending a hand at the garden this season? Our weekly Wednesday volunteer hours will resume on March 27th (though be sure to sign-up if you’d like to attend). We’re also looking for folks to help at the Plant Sale & Local Garden Fest on April 27th.

Looking forward to see you all out in the garden!

Garden tip

Now is a great time to direct seed cool season crops outdoors. Cool weather loving plants like radish, turnips, beets, and kale will germinate even when soil temperatures are still chilly. For slightly more sensitive crops, like lettuce, consider using row cover to provide a little additional protection.

The Desert Oasis Teaching Garden is a community education and experiential learning space at Albuquerque Academy where we explore sustainability and growing food in the arid southwest. We take the classroom into nature to investigate innovative ideas for cultivating dryland growing and we share this information across the middle Rio Grande region. The DOT Garden is a space where everyone is welcome to volunteer their time and knowledge to inspire others to fold sustainable living into their lives. We want to support all of Albuquerque becoming more adaptable and resilient.
