Letter from the E.D.
Daylight savings time is here, the weather is slowly beginning to warm up and I know I am looking forward to spring and the coming summer.

Spring has brought unexpected sadness to the Castro community however. Gilbert Baker's unexpected and sudden death last Thursday March 30th shocked the Castro community. I had only just met Gilbert, but we connected over our joint passion for public art. He the creator and me a member of the art loving public. I've thought about Gilbert a lot the past week and how his rainbow flag changed the world. The symbol he created to represent the LGBTQ community was an act of genius in its simplicity, its beauty, its representation of diversity and its symbol of love and peace. It is a symbol and flag that is recognized into the far reaches of the globe, the world over knows the rainbow flag represents the proud LGBTQ community.  We are so lucky to have had Gilbert as a leader. He will be remembered forever and we will work to ensure his legacy and the history of the flag lives on. Thank you Gilbert, from the bottom of my heart.

Castro Cares' Use of Patrol Specials Effective

PSP officers record the data of each incident and Castro Cares periodically analyzes this data to make changes to improve effectiveness. The latest analysis shows a downward trend in some of the more significant incidents.

In 2016, the number of incidents of obstructing the sidewalk dropped from an average of 40-50 percent of all engagements in the first five months of 2016 to an average of 8-12 percent in the last seven months. Trespassing was reduced from about 25 percent in January and March of last year to less than 10 percent last September, October, and November. Aggressive panhandling was almost completely eliminated November and December.

Castro Cares funded PSP officers are funded for 32 hours a week and work Friday and Saturdays from 7 pm - 7 a.m. and Sunday from 9 am - 5 pm. Castro Cares is looking forward to being able to fund a PSP officer during the weekdays. The weekday shifts would be funded through donations. To learn more or to donate go to the Castro Cares website.
