I started growing herbs and lettuce with my new hydroponic garden! The garden is very small, yet it has yielded great insight into the agricultural industry. OK, that is an overstatement… To date, my entire harvest

amounts to a few garnishes of Genovese Basil and four leaves of Paris Island Lettuce.

I remember being so excited when the seedlings poked through; I sent pictures to my family as if they were my very own offspring. The leaves started at about one to two millimeters in size. Then, overnight, I could see growth exceeding half an inch! After watching a 1:51 minute video, I became a pruning expert in the “haircut” and “single-leaf harvesting” methods.

Now, I am equipped to share my leadership insights based on my vast agricultural experience:

  • Big results start small: Many of my clients tend to their projects and start-up businesses with seemingly no sign of effectiveness. Then all of a sudden, their efforts pay off! You can’t skip nurturing no matter how dismal it looks. (What could you nurture more in your work?)
  • Recognize failure, quickly: On the other hand, it is important to recognize failure. For example, two of my lettuce seed pods failed to germinate within the expected window of 4-8 days. I decided to wait 16 days before I replanted. Guess what? The new seedlings were showing growth within 3 days. I didn’t really need 16 days to diagnose a problem. My hope was misplaced and too far extended. (What should you be uprooting?)
  • Never put off harvest: Successful farmers never put off harvest. In our work, it is tempting to let something slide by a day or two. The discipline required to do make one more phone call or to fully honor a big deadline is the difference between storing a surplus in the barn and losing the whole crop! (What excuse are you using to delay deliverables?)
  • Maintain the equipment: Farmers spend a lot of money on the best equipment for the job. They also ensure the equipment is in good repair for the demanding season of harvest. When I consider of my equipment, I think of my mind and body. Sleeping, eating, and drinking well are important to making sure we feel and operate at our best. (What improvements to your routine are you avoiding?)

Someday, I will make pesto and brochette and… Oh, I can’t wait! In the meantime, I want to remember big things come from humble beginnings. Sometimes, I just need to scrap an effort for which I have high hopes, quickly replant seeds, and plan for future success.
