Market News

How about putting a pasture raised turkey on the table for Thanksgiving this year?  Fountain Springs in Morrison has 50 deposits available on the market.  Fountain Springs turkeys are moved to fresh paddock daily allowing them to munch on all the green grass, clover, and bugs they want. Their diet is supplemented with a custom blend of NON-GMO grain and minerals. Unfortunately, Fountain Springs will not have additional turkeys available near Thanksgiving so make sure to reserve your turkey soon! You'll find them on the market under Turkey.

We are excited to welcome Humble Hearts Farm from Limestone County, Alabama to the market!  They raise Saanen goats which they milk to make a fine quality farm fresh chevre.  Humble Hearts provides customers with the freshest goat cheese possible. Workshop Summary:

Grundy County Extension has been offering a number of great seminars for small producers and Barbara Camm has been good enough to pass along information from these seminars for folks that couldn't be there.

Last week's seminar on raising blueberries was very discouraging.  It seems that the spotted wing drosophila (a pest) is upon us and our berries.  This article is the most complete information I could find.  http://www.birc.org/FinalOctober2015.pdf

This company is developing a fungus variety of Beauveria bassiana that specifically attacks this pest.  However, it is not clear how this might affect our bees. https://www.facebook.com/rinconvitova.insectaries

Thanks to Grundy County Extension and to Barbara for getting this information out to our farmers! Keep up the great work.

Jess Wilson from Summer Fields and In Town Organics can hardly stand the cuteness with all the baby lambs and goats on her farm in Monteagle. She is hoping to share this so look for information about a lamb ogling open house sometime in April!
The South Cumberland Farmer's Market and the South Cumberland Food Hub are divisions of Rooted Here, located in Sewanee, Tenn., an organization of farmers, artisans, and agricultural producers who work together to facilitate and expand the sale of local products; provide education, services, and support to farmers and consumers; and lay the groundwork for a just, equitable, and sustainable local food economy.
