Hello, Beads of Courage friends!

We would like to wish a very happy Child Life and Social Work month to all clinicians in these fields. We are so grateful for all that you do especially during such a trying time. We also want to thank all of the medical professionals who are putting the patients' needs before their own during this global crisis. You are all amazing.

Beads of Courage is still currently able to fulfill orders at this time. We are taking precautions to assure safety to all. The staff is working in shifts to minimize exposure as well as sanitizing and disinfecting hands and workstations regularly. No outside visitors or volunteers are permitted at Beads of Courage headquarters.

We thank you in advance for your patience and we will continue to do our best to get materials to you as quickly as possible.

Love and light,
The Beads of Courage staff

Bead Strong provides experiences in mindfulness using mantras, art, breathwork, and beads. It incorporates a reflective art directive to support psychosocial and emotional well-being of anyone receiving care for an illness, their families and friends, as well as the clinicians who support them. Adults and children alike can share in this experience.

We are hearing stories from clinicians in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis about the complexity of patient interactions due to new guidelines, isolation restrictions, shortage of Personal Protective Equipment, and the loss of volunteers. This has made the psychosocial care of children and their families challenging.

Beads of Courage has programs to equip hospital clinicians with tools that are supportive and easy to implement. These programs, such as Bead Strong, can be adapted to use in a variety of situations.
Jennifer Ricca, Hospital Outreach and Child Life Specialist at Ronald McDonald House New York, has come up with an innovative way to provide support incorporating Beads of Courage programming. Here is what she had to share:

"Since COVID-19 has become rampant in NYC, and with the mandated federal shut down, I have been asked to work from home. The pediatric cancer families staying at Ronald McDonald House NY for treatment are quarantined to their rooms... I have been worried about how they would be coping with being away from their own home during this unsettled time as well as handle the daily medical treatments for their child. I have been working with Beads of Courage since last year for the Sibling Group. My goal was to eventually expand the Beads of Courage program into the three times a week Caregiver Support Group. That goal has become a reality.

I am now in the process of creating a virtual Caregiver Support Group with two colleagues (social worker and Wellness Manager). We hope to provide... some semblance of normalcy to their day. We will have time for overall conversations as well as activities, including Bead Strong. Beads of Courage has offered to send each set of the beads I ordered to my home, so I can do the activity with the caregivers. Beads of Courage has been a wonderful organization that has worked with me during this surreal time in our world and understand that we all want to help create a “new normal” for our families during this time."
Thank you Jennifer! We are so grateful for your caring heart, your passion, and for "thinking outside of the box" in order to support the families at your organization.

We are happy to work with any organization to "brainstorm" ideas of how Beads of Courage programs can be used during these unprecedented times.
