The year of the Tiger begins with a roar!

At long last some semblance of “normal”, returning to Queensland.

Schools are back to classroom learning, our State and international borders are opening up to tourist and travellers alike and we are holding our first face to face chamber meeting for 2022 on 22 February. Please do come along and meet new members, re-connect with the fellow chamber members, and discover just what has been planned for the coming year.

One of our initiatives is reinstituting Friday night drinks. These will be held at the Everton Park Hotel in the front area. Business owners who may be interested in sponsoring these evenings should contact Mandy Barker and register to attend. There is no charge to attend, but you need to register to go into the running for a free breakfast for an upcoming chamber breakfast meeting.

Susanne Jones has reinvigorated the Women In Business lunches. Mike Rooney spoke at our last meeting and initiated an entertaining and informative discussion on Gender Diversity. Mike stressed the importance of addressing a client/business associate or friend by the correct pronoun, in both a social and business meeting.

This year in May we are holding a joint event with the NOW Network for the Men's Mental Health Week.  Donna Thistlethwaite will upload further details to our website in coming weeks.

I look forward to catching up with everyone over the coming months. 2022 is for me the year for reconnecting and moving forward.

I want to express my gratitude to the Committee Chairs and Executive Members who made their time available and provided ideas and strategies for our Strategic Planning Day earlier this month. Their ideas and suggestions have been included in our planning for 2022 to continue to provide opportunities for networking, to meet new members and to raise awareness and much needed funds for our Not for Profits in our community.

I look forward to seeing you all during the coming year at either a breakfast meeting, lunch or other networking event.  Mary

Treasurer

Financial reports for the month ended 31 January 2022.

Advocacy Committee

Chair | Brian Battersby

Current Activities

  1. The Queensland Government Department of Energy & Public works have started, first steps in a long process eventually aiming for smaller contractors to gain an opportunity to bid on smaller size Tenders. This change is something our Chamber has Advocated hard on over a One Year.

  2. We are very keen for both the Queensland and Federal Government’s to set an early date for the “return of Cruise ships” back into Australian. They need a date so the Tourism industry can forward plan and especially, to use our brand-new, World-Class Bris-Cruise Ship Terminal.

  3. We are working with the Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ) now into a second year of revision to their 3-year aspirations seeking Queensland Government help topics to Small Business.

  4. Our Chamber has given written support to Moreton Bay Regional Council for their bid, to change their name to include “City Status”. Some benefits are: Recognition, Tourism, Economic/Business Attraction, Olympic Games and being the third largest Council in Australia; Brisbane first, Gold Coast second then Moreton third largest by population size.

  5. A Ferny Hills Local and Chamber Member is leading the emphasis to grow our local Mountain Bike Trails via Queensland Parks & Recreation and Federal Government assistance aiming for both Economic and Tourist Growth benefits to businesses and the community. His ambitious plan if approved/completed could see a total of 163kms of single-track mountain bike and shared use trails across Northwest Brisbane and Moreton Regions.
Our Chamber Mission Statement is:
We, exist to support our members to achieve profitable and sustainable businesses and
effective not-for-profit organisations. We do this through:
  • Networking, Information Exchange, and Education.
  • Developing Apolitical, Positive Relationships and Communications with all levels of Government.
  • Contributing to the Wider Social, Health and Well-being of our Community.
The benefits of Queensland Small Businesses
  • Queensland small business population is estimated at 445,885 businesses
  • This represents 97% of businesses Queensland-wide
  • Small businesses employ 959,000 Queenslanders, or 37.7% of the state’s workforce. (Figures supplied by CCIQ Feb 2022)
Now with all this information about our Chamber and the Advocacy Committee, do you have a matter you wish us to consider its Advocacy Assistance, if so, email Brian with some brief details.  Brian

Meet the 2022 Federal Candidates Committee

Chair | Brian Battersby

Come along to our Chamber Breakfast Forum to meet and ask your question to 2022 Federal Candidates.

A forum date in our planning “maybe” 22nd March 2022 or possibly 26th April 2022 (the day after Anzac Day) even though a Federal Election date has not yet been set. Indications are, an Election Day could be prior to, or in the month of May 2022.

To date we have 10 (known to us) federal candidates across two federal seats of Ryan and Dickson, interested in our event. Because no actual election day is known, no forum date is selected as yet, so watch our website, via events.

We plan that our event will give both community and business members the opportunity of a friendly non-political Chamber/Breakfast forum, that starts “Sharp” at 6.45am till 8.30/9amish at the Arana Leagues Club.  All attendees need to “first book and pay the fee” using their 1st and 2nd full name/s and fully pay by 5 clear days prior to allow entry, so don’t book late as you could miss out. Plus, attendees will have an opportunity to ask a question to a Candidate. Any further info/enquiries, contact Brian via email or phone his mobile 0418 878 508

Women in Business Committee

Chair | Susanne Jones

We have deemed it necessary to postpone the Women in Business Award Event:

  • Nominations close 1st April
  • Finalists announced 8th April
  • Awards Gala Event 6th May
An update has been posted to the Chamber website, and numerous Facebook pages for greater exposure.

It would be great if every member in the Chamber could share the event and flyers within their own networks (and social media channels). The nomination process is very easy – let us do the work if you’d like to nominate someone else for the chamber member and/or the non-member. Simply scan the QR code or follow this link:

More event information including sponsorship opportunities will be communicated soon. Thanking you!  Susanne
