It is now 5 months since we decided to hold zoom meetings in lieu of face to face meetings. These have proven to be a success with the Tuesday Check-in’s each week and the monthly meeting with guest speakers being either widely attended or viewed later by members on our website.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to your Chamber Executive team who have come forward and donated their time and expertise to benefit everyone in putting these sessions together. To Donna Thistlethwaite who has arranged our guest speakers and set up the weekly roster for facilitators for these sessions. Thanks also go to John, Hayley, Stuart, Brian, Kate and Vanessa who have all ably assisted in these events for the benefit of all Chamber members.
The Executive, at our July meeting, made the decision to discontinue the Tuesday Check-Ins at the end of this month. It was agreed they had served their purpose to keep our members in touch and informed throughout the early management of the Covid-19 crisis.
The Moreton Region Business Expo will be held on the October 29 at the Hope Centre, Buchanan Street, Rothwell. Please consider getting involved in this business event. The Hills Chamber will be taking a stand. You are welcome to sign-on for our roster to work on the stand, purchase your own business stand or simply attend on the day. This event is a wonderful way to network and grow your business. If you would like further information please let me know.
Although the Tuesday Check-In’s are ceasing at July’s end, we are still only an email, or phone call away if you want get in touch. Mary
Meet the 2020/21 Hills Chamber Executive (Front Row, from left to right)
Donna Thistlethwaite, Mary Di Marco (President) and Vanessa Robson-Petch (Back Row from left to right)
Brian Battersby OAM, Hayley Lingard, Stuart Jaeschke, John Hudson and Kate Hewish.
Financial reports for the month ended 30 June 2020.
With COVID restrictions still upon us we continue to host our monthly breakfast meetings via Zoom, though we are eagerly awaiting advice from the Arana Leagues CLub as to when we may be able to return to face to face meetings. This is proving somewhat difficult with the buffet style breakfast, but just know we are hoping to resume this as soon as we can in a safe and appropriate manner.
Despite these changes, we continue to gain new members and it is great to see so many renewing their memberships. There is no doubt that this time has been tough for many and some of our members have chosen not to renew their membership at this time. If you have not yet renewed your membership and would like to, we encourage you to do this as soon as possible. We will soon be going through the website and Facebook group to ensure that these remain Member spaces.
The Executive will be hosting one final Check-In Tuesday on the 21st July so I encourage you to make the most of this before they come to a close. We have sensed the needs of our group move and while support remains high on our list of aims we won’t be hosting these meetings post out July monthly (Zoom) Breakfast event.
There is little activity to report amongst our committees at this time, though we hope this will change in coming months. If you’ve thought about volunteering in the Chamber previously now may just be the time to think about this again. Please feel free to chat with any member of the Executive should you wish to explore any ideas or opportunities.
We will be looking for your business marketing material (one small item e.g. business card, flyer etc. per business) for the upcoming Small Business Expo in October and you may also wish to consider offering some time to The Hills & District Chamber table on the day or maybe even accessing your own subsidised stand on the day. Please feel free to chat with John Hudson, Anita Bird or me should you have any questions.
Wishing you all well and looking forward to seeing you all again when we can! Hayley
Business Development Committee
Chair | Sheldon Morey
We are seeking input and interest in helping develop programs for the chambers member business. Particularly newer members to the chamber who would have specialist needs and would like to extend their access to the HDCC support network.
The committee continues to be available to organise:
one to one mentoring,
small group business development programs, or
medium scale webinars
Our committees’ specialist areas include, business performance, organisational models, financial development, human resources, and applied technology. We also have significant access to other business disciplines through our external support networks. Sheldon
Cultural Inclusiveness Committee
Chair | Craig Shim
Representing the Hills Chamber for MBRC’s Making Successful Places Project.
In June, MBRC has ran a focus group facilitated by PwC looking at Making Successful Places. Findings from this project will feed into a variety of Council-led strategies, including the new Regional Economic Development Strategy which is currently being developed.
During the focus group, I raised opportunities to contribute towards:
a regional identity
tourism, particularly opportunities around international tourism and accessibility tourism, citing our very own All Accessibilities Playground at Patrick Leslie Park as a great world-class example of the facilities we already have
I also shared how cultural inclusiveness could be a differentiating factor for our region when it comes to economic growth from inbound investment (international and domestic) as well as from international tourism. One practical example I offered would be for our Chamber to be actively involved in international delegations, taking a proactive approach to supporting new interstate / international businesses seeking to setup in the region.
