Welcome to The Hills & District Chamber of Commerce Inc. - a friendly and supportive business group bridging the Ferny Hills, Arana Hills, Ferny Grove, Keperra, Mitchelton and surrounding districts. Established in 1992, our Chamber is not-for-profit and is affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our July breakfast. This event celebrates all our Not For Profit groups within our community.

Donna Thistlethwaite has arranged for a fabulous array both elected members and Not for Profit representatives to present an insight into their work and how our chamber has assisted them over the years. 

We are in the leadup to the Big Breakfast event. Our Not for Profits are the beneficiaries of this fun morning.  Don’t forget to book your table. Invite some colleagues to attend, or better still book a table and bring your colleagues. The breakfast is at the Eaton Hills Tavern, a fabulous venue.

As well, July is the first meeting with our new breakfast menu. You can select from fruit, yoghurt, toast, (you can make to your liking), and the answer to all your prayers, an urn so you can make multiple cups.
Covid is now a fact of life for everyone. I am one of the 10% who have received their vaccines, I look forward to us being able to open our borders in the not too distant future.

Advocacy Committee

Committee Member | Joanne Harding-Smith

It’s with great pride that we announce a big win for our advocacy committee for a long time member who has been hit particularly hard during the pandemic.  Joanne Harding-Smith from Maverick Travel had her Travel Consumer Grant application rejected and we escalated through Peter Dutton’s office (it’s a Federal Grant) and last week she was finally approved and paid.  This is a godsend to Joanne and her clients as she continues to fund herself whilst she continues to fight to get the travel refunds and credits sorted.  This is exactly what the Grant was for, unfortunately bureaucracy had gotten in the way and we are very grateful for Peter Dutton’s assistance with this.  Great work Peter!!

Wanted: Local Businesses for Refugee Career Matching Opportunities

We are still trying to match these professionals with work experience or employment opportunities. Is there anyone in your business network who might be a good fit?
If you missed last month’s newsletter, we’re doing a shout-out for businesses in a position to offer employment or work experience to a qualified lawyer, accountant or IT professional seeking local Australian experience.
These three proactive Brisbane-based candidates just happen to be from refugee backgrounds and are keen to simply get some Australian experience. All we need are local companies to match them with as part of our Refugee Career Matching & Mentoring Initiative.
You don’t need to be a member of our Hills Chamber to participate, just an ability to offer any of the following: paid employment, work experience or mentoring. These are some of the most practical ways you can help people from refugee backgrounds “get a foot in the door” to employment in Australia.

Women In Business
Save the date! The Women In Business committee will be getting together and invite any interested members to join them on Friday, 6th August from 12.30 – 2.00pm. Venue to be confirmed, so keep an eye on our website and social media and join us for lunch.
