Chamber Update

Hello everyone
I have had the privilege this month of representing the Chamber at the Queensland Government’s Youth Strategy Forum event recently held at the PCYC. Our focus was on the views and priorities of young people who are involved in the Australian Defence Force community. As usual I learned a great deal about the responsibility that we as members of the business community have to our wider community, outside of making a decent living for our families.

Our young people coming on were asked to think about their needs down the track and it was so difficult for them yet to their credit they contributed to discussions in many constructive and honest ways.

Subsequently I met with Maj. Graham Palmer, the Brigade Welfare Officer from Enoggera. The meeting was arranged by one of our members who have a real caring focus for our returned service men and women and for their families who are affected by the trauma of their assignments. I had no idea of the size of the challenge.

People, there is so much good going on in our community at a grass roots level and there are so many outstanding people going about doing good things that we never hear about. Maj. Palmer mentioned that one of the difficulties that he needs to address from time to time is the need for employment for the families of service people.

On your behalf, I have extended an invitation to Maj. Palmer to meet the members of the Chamber. In the event that he has family members needing employment I have offered him the opportunity of advising the Chamber so that we might look at whether there is anything constructive that we might do. Thank you to all the people that have helped in the running of the Chamber.

Lastly, congratulations on our largest ever breakfast gathering in February and also on the fact that membership now exceeds 100.    Ron

We would like to hear more about you and your businesses. The planning for breakfast member presentation spots for the second half of the year is happening now.  Let me know if you would like to do a presentation so we can get it booked in!

If you drew a business card from the bowl at our last breakfast please don't forget to make those coffee appointments, it is a great way to learn more about each other and our businesses.    Kellie

Many of our members supported the MBRIT event last month at Woody Point Hotel where Franchisee success story Janine Allison told her story. It was an excellent event and we look forward to more in the future. More photos on our Facebook page ...

At the February breakfast meeting we welcomed 5 new members and had 12 guests. The table discussion was: We don’t know what we don’t know - what is the most important HR lesson you have learnt? Much discussion ensued.

Due to time constraints we were not able to have a Member Speaker. The Guest Speaker was Ian Alcock from HR4U who spoke on The Conversation Games People Play.
Our free breakfast draw was won by Wendy Belham from Allied Immigration Services. Attendance of 60 booked seats was a record with actual attendance of 57.
Remember: Membership renewals are now due.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Unfortunately we have a breakfast cost rise so from 1 May 2016 the early bird price will rise to $25.00    Leonard

Reminder:
Membership renewals are now due.

Over the past year, the Hills & Districts Chamber has had a little bit of a makeover with some changes to the breakfast meetings and an injection of new contributors and events. I think everyone would agree that if we keep moving with the times, we will continue to be a stable constant in the area and continually relevant to our members and to the wider business community.
Keep an eye out for a logo refresh in the near future. All will be revealed very soon!  In the meantime, please forward this newsletter to others and email me with your ideas about promoting the Chamber.    Alisa
