Dear Friend,

Drawing an ellipse is a simple way to add a sense of perspective to your sketches. I often use this shape as a quick way to give a sense of space.

To get the right shape, pretend you’re circling a written word on a piece of paper. Or, because it’s summer -– think of an ellipse as a surfboard!

In this 5:30 min video, I’ll show you:

  • how to use lined paper to practice drawing your ellipses

  • how to draw a person that “fits” into the landscape

  • how to draw a community that “fits” into the landscape

Bonus -- an ellipse is also a tried and true way to draw a talk bubble.

And, as you might remember from 1:44 of this video, an ellipse is also a way to show people gathered at a table, which is a symbol I use all the time to stand in for “meeting” or “discussion”.

Let me know how it goes, and what you want to learn next!

Warmly,
Emily
