NYC REIC Updates for May, 2016

Scoping Public Forum - Please join us!

The Scoping Workgroup is refining a rating system that we will propose the NYC REIC adopt for evaluating whether a project is one we want to finance. You can see the preliminary draft we presented here. You can comment on a live version of the document here.

Join us at a public forum to discuss how to make this better

With the Community Organizing and Relationship Building Working Group

The Community Outreach and Relationship Building Working Group is seeking new members with great community organizing skills. We are looking for someone who can help us build our community engagement model and educate the membership in best practices in how to reach out to communities and work together with them, in a horizontal, democratic, grassroots way.

With The Grievance Committee

The Grievance Committee needs you to help us keep the REIC members and leadership accountable. We are working to establish the message and procedures that all members can expect all other members to uphold. We can use help in two phases: 1) Over the next month, the GC will establish procedures for evaluating complaints from members. 2) As required, self-selected members to meet when an appeal is made by a member or members to the GC.

Help us formulate a system of accountability and reasonable expectations to help keep the REIC open to all!

Committee Report Back:
Steering Committee

In April, your Steering Committee wrapped up its very first quarter by learning from members of the NorthEast Investment Cooperative (NEIC), the Grounded Solutions Network, the National Cooperative Bank and AAFE’s Equality Fund.

We organized an All-Member Meeting that included speakers from New Yorkers for a Human Scale City and the Artist Studio Affordability Project, as well as an introduction to #SaveNYC, TakeBackNYC and Small Business Congress and, which are organizing to pass the Small Business Jobs Survival Act, a policy solution that has been on the table for 30 years(!), that would allow NYC’s small businesses and artists to survive by putting regulations on commercial real estate similar to those on residential property.

This was a mutual introduction, and we look forward to finding ways of working together!

We continue to work towards establishing a permanent structure for the NYC REIC with ratified bylaws, while carrying out the other duties outlined in our charter. In addition to the Grievance Committee and Communications Committee, we have established a Governance and Bylaws Committee and an Events Committee.

We will work closely with Community Organizing & Relationship Building (CORB) and Scoping, which are transitioning from being Workgroups to Committees.

If you are interested in participating in any of these committees, please email:
