Unsung Heroes
By Greg Sanders
The expansion of God’s Kingdom has been advanced by multitudes of marginally known people who made great sacrifices and had great influence to those they ministered. Two such unsung heroes in God’s word are Prisca and Aquila. Paul mentions these two in Romans 16:3. He writes "Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who have risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.” No one really knows exactly what risk they took; we only know what a huge impact it had on the life of Paul and all the churches around.
You don’t have to be an expert to make a huge difference in the Kingdom of God; you just have to be willing to take a risk. These two obviously endangered their own lives in order to protect the often-persecuted Paul. Though the world may never know the exact risk they took, but Paul never forgot it. One thing you can count on is that God never overlooks anything you do for Him. There is no task that is insignificant and no sacrifice that goes unnoticed in His kingdom. By trade, these two were common tent makers. In God’s Kingdom, especially for Paul and for the early church, they were heroes. You don’t have to be well known or well to do to make a huge difference for God. He is not looking for experts, just vessels who are willing.
Here are a few lessons for consideration from these unsung heroes:
• Sacrifice leads to significance. At some point, your love for God will draw you to a place of self-denial and sacrifice. Jesus taught that in order to follow Him, you had to deny yourself. Prisca and Aquila embodied that teaching and their faith served as an example to the entire church.
• What you pass on to others never dies with you. They accurately taught the word of God to many people. One such person was Apollos. Apollos’ ministry flourished and everywhere he preached the influence of this couple was multiplied. You don’t have to be an expert; just be faithful to share what you know.
• You don’t have to be seen to leave a legacy. For every name mentioned in the New Testament, there are thousands more that are unnamed and unsung heroes. This couple could have easily been left off the page of God’s word but they are included to remind you that no person and no task goes unnoticed.
Today’s Challenge: Don’t get too fixated on keeping score or comparing your ministry to another. God sees all you do, all you give, and all you sacrifice. You do not have to be an expert to make a difference in God’s Kingdom.
