Worthless Worship
By Greg Sanders

2 Kings 17:15…..They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves. They followed the example of the nations around them, disobeying the lord’s command not to imitate them.

Worship defined is to honor with extravagant love and extreme submission. (Webster's Dictionary,1828) You cannot practice extreme submission to more than one entity without a point of conflict and decision. As believers, we worship Jesus. We are convinced that He is the only one worthy of such extreme submission and love so we give ourselves to Him with joy. However, something happens when you worship. Not only are you expressing your love to someone or something, you are also exchanging what is in you for what is in them. That is a point of encouragement for the worshipper of Jesus, but a point of concern for those who worship lessor things.

2 Kings says that those who worship worthless idols actually become worthless themselves. That is a pointed statement. But the principle is that the value of what you worship becomes the value of the worshipper. One of the enemy’s greatest ways to get someone to live a life of powerlessness and emptiness is to convince them to worship lessor things. When someone worships someone other than Jesus they voluntarily empty themselves of their God-given worth and exchange it for an endless void.

Worshipping Jesus is never worthless because you are worshipping the One who is worthy. When you elevate your worship towards God His worth begins to enter your heart and make you more like Him.

Today’s Challenge: Realize that you can only show extreme submission and love to one person. Make sure that your worship is pointed toward the One who is worthy.
