Don't Let the Fire Die
By Greg Sanders

Leviticus 6:12'The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it. It shall not go out, but the priest shall burn wood on it every morning; and he shall lay out the burnt offering on it, and offer up in smoke the fat portions of the peace offerings on it. 13'Fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it is not to go out.

Throughout the scripture we can see that one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is fire. Fire represents the Holy Spirit’s guidance, His presence, and His nature. The symbol of fire reminds us that the Holy Spirit does not desire to be relegated to one area of your life but truly wants to consume all of your life. I hope you have experienced the reality of God’s Spirit in your life to the extent that what occurred in your life could only be described as the fire of God coming and settling on you.

Leviticus 6 reminds us that the fire of the Holy Spirit coming to our lives is truly a work of the Father. However, there is a responsibility upon you to keep His activity fueled and to steward His work in your life. It was the job of the priest to keep the fire burning. As modern a day servant of God that same responsibility falls upon you. Never let the fire die.

How can you keep the fire burning in your life?

Feed the fire. Any fire without fuel will eventually go out. You feed the fire of the Holy Spirit in your life by consuming His word, spending time in His presence through prayer, and obeying His commands. Some people believe that obedience to God’s word wears you down. They are mistaken. As Jesus said in John 4:34 doing the will of God actually fires us up.

Fan the fire. A fire without air will suffocate. You fan the fire of the Holy Spirit by operating in His will and operating in the gifting that He has placed in your life. Everyone has gifting and talents from the Lord. When you submit those giftings to the Lord it brings life to the dormant places of your life. Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:1, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”

Refuse to quench the fire. Every fire has an enemy. Life desires to dampen out the fire that God puts inside of you. We must be keenly aware of what quenches the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When sin and compromise is allowed to reside within our lives it quenches the fire of the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 says, “Do not extinguish the Spirit.”

Spread the fire. One of the best ways fire can be preserved is by sharing it with others. When you share the fire that God has put in your life is does not diminish in any way what God is doing in you. On the contrary, when you share, the fire is reignites the passion of God in your life as you participate in the purpose of His Kingdom.

Today’s Challenge: Don't let the fire die. Take one of the steps above today to cherish the fire that God has so graciously brought to your life.
