Your Message Matters
By Greg Sanders

Mark 5:18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

I have always applauded Peter and the other disciples who left all they had to follow Jesus. I have often used that willingness as the measuring stick of my own commitment. I ask myself, “Am I willing to leave it all for Jesus?” That has been pictured as the ultimate test of discipleship. However, in this account, Jesus turns that response around. Jesus does not say leave this place and follow him, but rather stay in this place and follow him. Sometimes it’s just as hard to stay, as it is to leave. Jesus demonstrates that discipleship is not about where you follow; it is all about whom you follow.

The message of your life may have been most meaningful to those who saw you in your mess. There is a certain amount of authentication that needs to be seen by our world today. They need to know what God has done and what He can do is the real deal.  If you come into contact with someone who knew you before you were living for the Lord, they may meet your conversion with doubt. However, as you stay faithful, your persistence in following Christ becomes an undeniable declaration about the power of God.  This man wants to follow away from his home but Jesus realizes that this man’s message would be most valued in the place where he is known best.

Today’s Challenge: Realize that it is not the distance you travel; it's the difference you make. You need to understand that Jesus wants to use you to make a difference in your community. The message of your life shines brightest in the darkest places.
