Adopt-a-Student Program
It’s the beginning of the 2016-17 school preparation season for Adopt-A-Family through the State Service Centers!

Even as we gear up to help provide much needed educational support to needy children, we are also aware that the economic situation at this time is hitting everyone especially hard.  Even those with jobs have had to “tighten their belts” one or two notches due to reduced hours, business lay-offs, and closings.  These households are finding it difficult to pay basic living expenses; many have lost their homes or are living with relatives or friends in uncertain situations, and, yet others are in homeless shelters trying to find a way to get back into a place of their own where they can provide a secure, normal home for their children.

In the midst of all these struggles, the children of these families continue to grow and need new clothes and shoes as well as haircuts and school supplies.  How will families get through the next school year? Where will the resources come from?  The answer to that question is YOU, our devoted and caring sponsors.  You, who have shown time and time again that you care about the future of our children.

How you can help is simple.  Details are below:
  • You may send us a check, bring cash, gift cards, or backpacks filled with school supplies. You can even have fun by making it a team collection effort!
  • It takes about $50 to provide two uniforms for a student and about $25 to provide them with a pair of shoes.
  • All donations are tax deductible.
  • Deadline for all donations is Friday, August 5, 2016.
  • However, please contact Adopt-A-Family office if you need an extended deadline.
  • Please deliver your donation to either our New Castle or Kent/Sussex locations:
    • New Castle: 3301 Green Street, 2nd Floor, Claymont, DE 19703 OR
    • 13 SW Front Street, Milford, DE 19963 between 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
  • You may contact us in New Castle at (302) 792-6510/email at sharon.brown@state.de.us or in Kent/Sussex County at (302) 424-7260/email at shannon.smith@state.de.us if you should have questions or need additional information.

A Matter of Balance
Volunteer Delaware 50+ offers fall prevention programs for those 60+:  A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce a person’s fall risks by changing attitudes and behaviors and through an exercise program that improves strength, balance and flexibility.  This program meets for 2 hours once a week for 8 consecutive weeks.

The Moving for Better Balance Program uses Tai Chi inspired movements to reduce fall risks by improving overall core and leg strength.  This program meets twice a week for one hour each time for 4 months.

CVA Registration
The final CVA registration deadline in 2016 is less than TWO MONTHS away

Anyone wishing to take the exam in October must apply by September 15, 2016.

The certification process advances both personal and professional development.

There are various types of support offered to help candidates succeed:
"This past spring, I participated in the CVA certification process. Preparing for certification helped me focus on ways I could improve my performance as a volunteer manager. The framework of core competencies provided by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration is both challenging and reassuring, in turn. In my preparation and testing, I could apply what I was learning to my work at Winterthur. The course of study has also allowed me to perceive opportunities for further growth in the profession." -Tricia Davies
