Dr. Pablo Penaloza-MacMaster Selected for NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (DP2)

Dr. Penaloza-MacMaster is an Immunologist in the Department of Microbiology-Immunology and was recruited to Northwestern University in 2016 with support from the Third Coast Center for AIDS Research. He was recently selected for an NIH Director New Innovator Award (DP2) to develop interferon-modulated vaccines against HIV. The project aims to develop antigenically tailored HIV vaccines containing diverse envelope sequences, with the goal of improving immune coverage in this population, and at the same time exploiting the adjuvanticity of IFN-I modulation.

Dr. Steven Thrasher Pens Essay on the Connections between the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19, and the Viral Underclass

Read Dr. Thrasher’s essay, “An Uprising Comes from the Viral Underclass,” published on June 12 in Slate Magazine. Steven Thrasher is the  Daniel H. Renberg Chair of social justice reporting and an assistant professor of journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School and a faculty member of the Third Coast CFAR. 

NIH Announces New COVID-19 Funding Opportunities and Pre-application Webinars

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is encouraging research to test the implementation of COVID-19 diagnostic testing in underserved or vulnerable communities through the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) initiative. The NIH has announced several notices, funding opportunities, and webinars to support RADx-UP: NOT-OD-20-119NOT-OD-20-120NOT-OD-20-121, and RFA-OD-20-013.

IAS Adds Free Virtual COVID-19 Conference to AIDS 2020

 
The virtual COVID-19 Conference will take place online on the last day of AIDS 2020: Virtual. It will feature a free-of-charge, stand-alone programme of plenary, invited-speaker and abstract-driven sessions exclusively dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Confirmed speakers include Drs. Anthony Fauci, Deborah Birx, and Salim Abdool Karim, Director of CAPRISA and Chair of the South African Ministry of Health COVID-19 Advisory Committee.

The Global Village and Youth Programme at AIDS 2020: Virtual


The Global Village is a diverse and vibrant space where communities from all over the world gather virtually to connect, share and learn from each other during AIDS 2020: Virtual. The free virtual Global Village is open to members of the public, as well as conference delegates, intersecting with the main virtual conference programme, featuring 220 activities from live workshops to on-demand sessions, cultural performances, networking zones, NGO booths, and art exhibits.
