National campaign launched to prevent romance fraud
As one victim said: “When Romance turns to Finance – Beware!”
Across Avon and Somerset, almost 200 reported incidents were recorded between August 2019 and August 2020, with reported financial losses totalling approximately £2.4million. Across the UK during the same period, losses totalled £66,335,239 – an average loss per person of just over £10,000.
Police forces across the country are working together with partners to tackle romance fraud, with a combination of awareness raising and enforcement activity, co-ordinated by the City of London Police and Action Fraud.
