The Schneider Museum of Art is pleased to announce that Storm Tharp, a participating artist in the Portland2016: A Biennial of Contemporary Art exhibition, has arrived on the Southern Oregon University (SOU) campus for a month-long artist-residency.  The artist will provide a public lecture in SOU’s Meese Auditorium on Monday, October 3 at 3:30 PM. Admission is free.

Storm Tharp works and lives in Portland, where he creates the characters in his mysterious paintings. He was raised in Ontario, OR and attended Cornell University, graduating from the College of Architecture, Art and Urban Planning in 1992. He is a painter and sculptor whose work has been acquired by various public collections including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Albight Knox Gallery and The Cleveland Art Museum.  In 2010, Storm participated in The Whitney Biennial and in 2013, a mid-career survey of his work was presented at The Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, NY. He is represented by PDX Contemporary Art and Galerie Sébastian Bertrand.

As part of his artist-residency, Tharp will produce art in SOU’s Center for the Visual Arts studios alongside art students. In addition to his public lecture to be held on Monday, October 3 at 3:30 PM in the Meese Auditorium, Tharp will participate in classroom visits and student art critiques.  The residency is part of the New Art Oregon Project, funded by The Ford Family Foundation, Roseberg, OR.

Campus Theme Lecture: Masks, Expressive Action and the Shapes of Curiosity

The timeless art of the Neo-Classic mime/clown comes to Ashland Tuesday October 4 when Sigfrido Aguilar of Guanajuato, Mexico teams up with OCA Theatre Faculty James Donlon to kick off the SOU Campus Theme “Shapes of Curiosity.”

The lecture/demonstration will explore the geometrical body within the architectural elements of the stage, removing the familiar to emphasize physical form, lines, and planes, revealing a deeper, symbolic, emotional content of human experience.

Both Aguilar and Donlon are master teachers and performers. Sigfrido Aguilar is a visiting faculty member in the OCA Theatre program since fall term. Since 1968, he has taught extensively in the USA, Europe, Asia, and Mexico. He is the founder and director of the Estudio Busqueda de Pantomima Teatro in Ashland’s sister-city Guanajuato, Mexico. Aguilar was the first mime, performer and teacher at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Clown College, and has received numerous awards including the National Award for Theatrical Experimentation and "Mi Vida en el Teatro" by the UNESCO -ITI- Mexico. He has also received numerous grants to create and teach Movement Theatre including The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Washington, DC.

All Campus Theme events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit their website at sou.edu/humanities.

Dobro master and 13-time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas is to the resonator guitar what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar: elevating, transforming, and reinventing the instrument in countless ways. In addition to being widely recognized as the foremost master of the Dobro, Jerry Douglas is a freewheeling, forward-thinking  musician whose output incorporates elements of bluegrass, country, rock, jazz, blues and Celtic into his distinctive musical vision.
