Deagon Ward E-News

October 2015

The last few weeks have been very busy around the Deagon Ward community! I had had the opportunity to visit seniors groups and have a chat about whats important to them. These include Sandgate Senior Citizens, Sandgate Pensioners and Superannuates and Zillmere Seniors. I also had morning tea with volunteers and community members at the Zillmere Community Centre and with residents at Baldwin Living in Taigum.

Sandgate District High School hosted a concert recently for seniors, aged care residents and day respite clients. This concert showcased some fantastic singing, acting and musical perfomances. Congratulations to teacher Debbie O'Shea for a fantastic event. State Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe and I helped fund the lunch provided after the concert, with catering by Cafe On The Park.

I have launched a series of free community BBQs out in the suburbs. I held my first one at Boondall last weekend and will be in Zillmere this weekend. Keep an eye out on my Facebook page and in your letterboxes for our next BBQ.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Out and About in the Community

Sandgate Hawks Presentation Day

It was great to join the Sandgate Hawks juniors, their coaches and parents to celebrate a great season at the club. There were a few stand out teams this year including the U13s and U14s and with the huge participation at the younger levels this success is sure to continue. Well done to all the coaches and team managers who volunteer their time week in - week out. A big shout out to the other volunteers who make game day run smoothly. Looking forward to next season!

Giant Steps Project

Congratulations to Zoli Mauritz, Villiam Mauritz and Sharon Henry on their successful Giant Steps project. Locals would have seen giant bamboo poles on the Sandgate Foreshore a few weeks ago. This international project kicked off right here in Sandgate. This giant step will be moving all around the world and people can follow its progress. Sandgate and surrounds are becoming known as a place of world class artistic talent and this project has gone a long was in supporting that. I was proud to support this project with a grant to help make it possible.

Zillmere NHW Launch

For the first time in many years there is now a Neighbourhood Watch group in Zillmere. Thanks to the hard work by police at Boondall Station - particularly Leanne and Megan. Zillmere is a great community and it was great to see so many locals coming together to look out for eachother. If you want to get involved in Neighbourhood watch in your community make contact with your local police station.

Sandgate Brighton Catholic Parish Ramp

I recently helped launch a new access ramp at the Sandgate Catholic Parish Hall, made possible by a Brisbane City Council Access and Inclusion Grant. Thanks to Fr Modestus and Bishop Finnegan and the whole parish community for their welcome. This ramp will mean those with mobility issues will be able to access the hall. Thanks to local member, Stirling Hinchliffe and Labor Lord Mayoral Candidate Rod Harding for attending also.

Greek Affair Multicultural Festival

Well done to the organisers and volunteers that made the 2015 Greek Affair Multicultural Festival possible – particularly Angela and Maria and the organising committee. This event is getting bigger and better every year and has become an event that people from right across the northside mark in their diary. The cultural displays and Greek food are always a highlight, but the best aspect is the community atmosphere that this festival creates. I was happy to support this festival with grant funding this year and look forward to supporting it growing in the year ahead.

What's Coming Up...

Zillmere Community BBQ

I have kicked off a round of free community BBQs starting last weekend. Between now and Christmas I will be visitng your suburbs across the Deagon Ward. This Saturday I will be at O’Callaghan Park (next to the PCYC) and Zillmere from 11am-1pm. Thanks to all the locals who came along to my Boondall BBQ to have a chat about local issues. Keep an eye on your letterbox for your local BBQ!

Victoria Newton Farewell Picnic

I'm looking forward to joining locals at Victoria Newton's community farewell. Thanks to Sara Duff and Susanna Holmes for organising this event. Victoria represented our community for 15 years and this is a great way for the community to come together to say thank you to her.

Taigum Ageing Expo

The 11th annual Taigum Ageing Expo is sure to be a huge success once again this year. The Ageing Expo, hosted by Taigum Square is supported by Banyo RSL and myself as local councillor. It has become an event that so many seniors in our community look forward to each year. Along with the information provided from a wide range of services including Anglicare, Niagara Therapy, St John's Ambulance, QLD Police Service, Breastscreen QLD, there is a full program of entertainment and other exhibitors.

Making the choices that allow you to stay healthy and happy in your community and your home for longer is very important and this expo brings together the services that make that possible. People are living longer today and you and your family want the peace of mind that’s services from Government and the private sector are responsive to their needs.
