Welcome to my first E-News

As you would be aware, Victoria Newton retired from Council and I have been appointed as the new Councillor. This is a great honour and I'm really looking forward to working with the community over the coming months and years.

My family has called our local community home for five generations - and there is no guessing why! This unique part of Brisbane is vibrant, active and has a strong history of volunteerism and community action. When we see something that we know is wrong - we do something about it. This strong sense of community isn't just reactive - its also very proactive.

We put on the best community festivals, have great service organisations that put in the hard yards in supporting those in our community who are doing it tough and know how to protect those things most important to us like our built heritage like the Shorncliffe Pier, Sandgate Town Hall or Eventide and our natural environment like the Boondall Wetlands or various lagoons and wetlands across the suburbs.

I want to make sure your voice is heard in Council and your concerns are listened to. So many of the things that impact on our day-to-day lives can be influenced or controlled by Council - and I want to make sure we get them right.

My office remains in Cliff Street and contact details remain the same also. You can contact me via Facebook by liking my page here.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

Message from Victoria Newton

Since being first elected it has truly been a great honour to serve the diverse communities of the Deagon ward over the past fifteen years. I really want to express my thanks and appreciation to the local community for this honour.

In stepping down from this role, I warmly welcome your new Councillor, Jared Cassidy.

Jared is a Deagon Ward local through and through, having grown up in Shorncliffe and now living in Deagon, as his family has done for generations.

With his deep knowledge of Deagon’s communities and his genuine passion for the region, Jared will be a wonderful council representative for the Deagon Ward. I know Jared will be a strong advocate for our local community and continue to ensure our area has a strong voice in Council.

Out and About In The Community

The last few weeks have been a busy time around the Deagon Ward with School, Sport and Community Events.

Seniors Week
The Sandgate Seniors Week concert at the Sandgate RSL was a huge event with over 200 locals coming along. Facin' the Crowd performed hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s and brough the house down! The Brisbane City Council puts these concerts on across Brisbane each year to mark Seniors Week.

Sandgate Art Show and Carnivale
It was great to officially open the Sandgate State School 'Stables Art Show and Auction' and to launch the Rainbow Street Mural with Kim Mancini in the last couple of weeks. The Art show and Carnivale helped Sandgate State School raise around $22,000. This money will go a long way in supporting this fantastic local school. The Brighton State School Fete raised over $31,000 the following weekend. The success of these events is testament to the hard work of volunteers and shows how much support there is for our local schools.

Zillmere Festival
The 2015 week long Zillmere Festival was a huge success. The Festival was launched with the Zest Market Day with market stalls, food and entertainment. The festivities continued throughout the week at various locations including the Zillmere Community Centre, Zillmere Library and Zillmere State School.

Gold Star Reading
The Gold Star Reading program has wrapped up with almost 6000 children participating across Brisbane. We had fun at Sandgate and Zillmere Library awarding those children who participated - some as young as 4!

Community News

Eventide Steering Committee Launched

State Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe, Wayne Swan and I launched the Independent Steering Committee for the future of Eventide recently. This is great news for the community - who will get a real say in the future of the site. Denise Herbert, former Councillor for Deagon Ward will chair the committee. To find out more contact Stirling Hinchliffe's office on 3639 9100.

Opening of Shillam Way

The official opening and dedication of Shillam Way occurred on Saturday September 12. Shillam Way is the pathway between the end of Cliff Street and Eagle Tce. This path has been named after Leonard and Kathleen Shillam who were local artists, of national acclaim. Some of their public work can be seen in the Einbunpin Lagoon (the brass cormorants). Leonard and Kathleen's family, Members of Keep Sandgate Beautiful, Sandgate & District Historical Society and the broader community came together to celebrate this occasion.

VMR Brisbane Emergency & Community Services Open Day

This Sunday (September 20) will see the VMR Brisbane Emergency & Community Services Open Day. The Emergency & Community Services Expo is part of a state-wide campaign to get your home and family ready for the bushfire and storm season. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in a career or Volunteering with Emergency Services.

This open day is occurring at the VMR, 95 Allpass Pde Shorncliffe from 9AM-2PM.

I'm proud to support this open day.
