Easter and school holidays are now over which means ANZAC Day is just around the corner and there are lots of ways you can participate in a service here on the Northside. Most local schools will be hosting services in the lead up to ANZAC Day and there are a range of services on the 25th. The first service is the Dawn Service at the Geebung RSL at 4.30AM and the last for the day is the sunset service starting at 4PM on the Brighton Foreshore near 19th Ave. See below for more details.

The Sandgate RSL Sub Branch have launched a new Facebook Page for locals to keep up to date about ANZAC Day and all of their other activities. Click here to find out more.

I have launched a petition calling on Council to fund an upgrade to the Einbunpin Lagoon. A plan was developed back in 2005 for a new natural wetland filtration area and a full replacement of the ageing wall. These plans were never funded and the lagoon has been suffering ever since. The lagoon is such an important part of our community, so please help me by signing the petition here.

Out and About in the Community

Health and Wellness Festival

On the first weekend of March I attended and helped launch the Health and Wellness Festival which was hosted in the Sandgate Town Hall. The event attracted residents from all-over Brisbane and was organised by locals. There was some great tips on how to remain fit, active and healthy. This event also supported the work of SANDBAG.

St Flannan's Primary School Talk

On March 21 I was invited to speak to Grade 6 Class at St Flannan's as part of their unit on how government works. I was impressed at how well informed they were and enjoyed sharing some facts about our very own Brisbane City Council. I also presented them with a City Flag for their classroom.

Mobile Office

One of the best parts of my job is being able to listen to residents - their concerns, issues and ideas. On March 24 I was joined by local residents out the front of Sandgate Woolworths and Brighton Shopping Centre. My Mobile Offices move throughout our community, from Zillmere to Brighton, so be sure to come find me or - of course - pop in to the Ward Office.

Sandgate Film Gala

I was really proud to be one of the major sponsors of this showcase of artistic talent and community spirit. The Sandgate Film Gala was a light-hearted, fun evening of short-films and is set to become a regular on the local calendar. The family, history and gala night sessions were very well attended. Hopefully we will see the next Sandgate Film Gala very soon!

Neighbour Day 2018

Neighbour Day 2018 was celebrated in our local community on March 25 at Donna Philip Park and Songbird Way Park. I was delighted to join our Neighbourhood Watch groups as they hosted a day of activities and conversations centred around building relationships with our neighbours, the elderly in particular. Neighbour Day is held in the last week of March every year, but that doesn't mean you can't get to know your neighbours throughout the year and get involved in your local Neighbourhood Watch Group. Bluewater Classic Bowls Competition

Congratulations to the Brighton Bowls Club for taking out this year's Bluewater Classic. They narrowly beat out Sandgate Bowls Club and Eventide Bowls. I was proud to sponsor this event and support a wonderful day of close competition and good sportsmanship. All of our bowls clubs are very friendly and community minded clubs, so be sure to support your local clubs so they can continue to support the community.

Photo Exhibition at Town Hall

You may have noticed the Sandgate Town Hall was transformed into a photography exhibit in late March with Paul Neil, local photographer, showcasing our local community in pictures. This has become an annual event in our community and is a great visual representation of all of the different events and activities right across the Northside. There are still a few items for sale so please contact Paul via his Facebook Page here if you are interested in any.

Queen's Baton Relay, Bluewater Festival, Brighton Roosters Community Day

Wow! What a phenomenal day for our community! On March 30, thousands flocked to our part of Brisbane to enjoy our beautiful foreshore and friendly community spirit. The day started at the Brighton Roosters Community Day, an event designed to celebrate our local identity and mark the entry of the Queen's Baton to the region. The Baton moved through our streets to the Bluewater Festival, hosted by the Sandgate Chamber of Commerce, for a very special change over of the baton-bearer on the pier. This event was filled with fun actives, market stalls and even a fly-over of a RAAF plane! The Baton then moved past the Sandgate Hawks and continued on its journey through Brisbane and finally to the Gold Coast. A special congratulations to our local baton-bearers who represented us so well.

With such a successful Baton Relay and Games on the Gold Coast, we can all be proud of both our athletes and our broader community!

Boondall Barracudas Club Day

I joined the Boondall Barracudas Swim Club on their final club day for the season and was thrilled to check out the new lane ropes and equipment that I was able to help fund. The Barracudas are one of three really great swim clubs in our area and are based at Boondall State School. Watch my chat with Tammy from the club here.

What's Coming Up...

Sandgate Bowls Corporate Cup, 18th of April

At 6.30pm (for a 7pm start) the Sandgate Bowls Club will host the Corporate Cup, a competition between teams of four. Food and drinks will be available for purchase and the entry fee to play is $10 per person. So, whether you are playing or just supporting please come along. I'm sure we'll see a great turnout with locals getting behind the newly reopened club. Click here to check out the club's Facebook Page

Boondall State School 'Around the World' Fete, 21st of April

A return to the traditional April Boondall State School Fete with an Around the World cultural twist. Come and enjoy all of the traditional Fete fair, rides, food and markets along with the added fun of cultural food stalls and entertainment that celebrate Boondall State School's diversity. ANZAC Day, 25th of April

Our community will commemorate ANZAC Day in a variety of ways this year. The day will begin at 4.30am with a service at Geebung RSL. The Sandgate Dawn Service will commence at 5.50am from Burnett Place. A number of day-time services will also be taking place with the Zillmere PCYC Service commencing at 8am and the Sandgate Service beginning at 9am. The for Anzac Day Sunset Service for 2018 will be taking place at the RAAF Memorial Park, corner of 19th Avenue and Flinders Parade, Brighton. Please arrive from 4pm and refreshments will be served from 5pm. This is promising to be a really special day in our community and I hope to see you out and about.

Long Table Dinner, 28th of April

Enjoy a unique evening under a full moon and sky full of stars, dining on the spectacular Shorncliffe Pier. Indulge in canapés, pre-dinner drinks and live music, as the evening commences at 5pm on the promenade. Watch the full moon rise over the bay whilst you enjoy your gourmet dinner on the Long Table stretched along the pier. This is promising to be a spectacular night. Mor information can be found here.

'Vaisakhi, 29th of April

Vaisakhi will be held on 29th April 2018 at Sandgate Hawks Sporting Club, Lemke Road Taigum from 9am to 7pm. Sports will start at 9am and cultural program will start at 12pm. Citizenship ceremony will be held from 2-4pm. Kabaddi final will start at 4:30pm and fireworks will be at 6:30pm. The celebration is a fair style event with traditional dancing, music, food stalls and fireworks. There will be rides and games for everyone. The event is open to the public and entry is free.

'The Tuesday Club', Brownsea Water Activities Center
Brownsea Water Activities Center has been donated a sailing boat to add to the fleet. The Center would like to engage a community who want to tinker, go sailing, go fishing, enjoy a BBQ and maintain a connection with like-minded people.
