Special Budget Update

Following my last message we have received some good news out of the budget after fighting for a better share of our rates as a community!

The Deagon Ward has secured much needed funding to carry out traffic management projects in both Boondall and Brighton. For the past five years or more residents have been calling for Council to act on dangerous rat-running in the streets east of Sandgate Road in Boondall including Aberdeen Parade, Normanhurst and Lyndhurst Roads. The petitions, surveys, community meetings and media pressure have finally convinced Council to allocate some funding to get this project started.

The budget has also allocated $275,000 in funding for a couple of local safety upgrades, helping keep students and their families travelling to local schools safe. This includes upgrades on Barfoot St, servicing Bracken Ridge State High School and Southerden St, servicing Sandgate State School and Sacred Heart School.

Another crossing point on Southerden St has been something I've been lobbying for with locals for the last few years, so this is a great outcome.

Zillmere will also see traffic improvements to ease congestion after funding was announced in this budget. I'm pleased to announce that $583,000 in budget funding has been secured for Handford Rd, Zillmere - a long overdue project. After upgrades are completed on Murphy Rd, the section of Handford Rd outside the Zillmere shops (inbound) will be the only remaining single lane section of this corridor.

In this year's budget, just over $3.2 million has been allocated for the completion of the brand new Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre. The new centre will educate visitors about the area's environmental significance, highlight the ecological significance of the Boondall and surrounding wetlands and be a showpiece environment education centre for Brisbane's northside. There will be a creative learning and play space where visitors can explore, discover and be inspired by the area's diverse wildlife and landscapes.

Funding has also been allocated to increase the level of safety for pedestrians on the Sandgate waterfront. Thanks to you, the Deagon Ward community, for your support in our campaign for better pedestrian safety and access on Flinders Pde. We have secured funding for a brand new pedestrian crossing on Flinders Pde, near 8th Ave.

Also, a much-needed upgrade for the Sandgate Library has been funded in this year’s budget. This will include things like, a new children's area, landscaping and outdoor area, refreshed interior and new technology.

Another huge win for the Deagon Ward community is the $250,000 for the Einbunpin Lagoon. This funding is significant - to date there hasn’t been a comprehensive plan for the long term management of the lagoon and a plan for solutions for the water quality issues. Following months of meetings, petitions, emails and letters we have finally secured funding to develop a comprehensive plan to fix the Einbunpin Lagoon.

Our community and multicultural festivals add vibrancy to our area and I’m very glad my request for festival funding for Christmas in Sandgate, Einbunpin Festival, Music by the Sea, Sandcliffe Writers Festival, Bluewater Festival, Pacific Islander Christmas and Zillmere Festival will continue.

Our annual Dogs Day Out in Brighton was another huge success!

The event raised money for Animal Welfare League Qld, a great organisation that does so many positive things in our local community and across the state.

Special thanks to Bramble Bay Lions, 4 Paws Dog GroomersAussie Pooch Mobile Dog Wash Australia, King of Coffee, Pets of Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Anika Wells for Lilley for their support on the day and leading up to this great event!

Men's Health Week Walk

Last week, Stirling Hinchliffe MP and I held our annual Men’s Health Week Walk.

This event, partnering with Heart Foundation Walking, Brighton Health Campus and for the first time sponsoring Beyond Blue, seeks to promote an active and healthy lifestyle and encourage important conversations regarding mental health.

Thanks to everyone who came along and participated in this important annual event.

Kyushin Ryu Jujitsu Competition - Sandgate

The annual Kyushin Ryu School of Jujitsu Inc. skills competition held at Sandgate PCYC is always a great display of skills, determination and good sports!

It's always a great pleasure to be on hand to congratulate the winners of the various disciplines from the first time competitors to black belts!

Sandgate State School Carnivale

I had a fantastic day at Sandgate State School’s Carnivale last weekend!

School events like this are great opportunities for the community to come along and support the great work our local schools do all year round. They are also important in raising some much needed funds for P&C projects.

I’m very proud to have sponsored this great local event once again this year.
