Deagon Ward E-News

February Edition 2021

It's been a relatively wet and windy start to 2021 here in the Deagon Ward. With significant rainfall over the past months localised flooding has almost been a common occurrence. In tough times though it's been heartening to see neighbours and mates lending a hand to those worst affected.

In the interests of minimising damage to flooded properties let's please avoid driving through inundated streets unless absolutely necessary. Driving, especially at speed pushes this water further into affected homes and causes totally unnecessary damage.

If it's flooded, forget it.

The past few weeks has also seen a variety of Council Projects undertaken and completed within the Deagon Ward. In a huge win for the local footy community and the Sandgate Hawks the new field fencing has been completed and is now in action. The club is extremely happy with the upgrade and I was happy to play my part in securing funding for the Hawks. We also saw the Bowden Park Geebung upgrade with the playground having been fenced off pending the completion of water mitigation works and general maintenance. Many other projects like the Deagon Sportsground Project are just on the horizon - so keep an eye out!

Over the past two months we have also enjoyed many great community events, primary among these being the Citizenship Ceremony held on January the 26th. I was proud to host this event and was joined by both Anika Wells MP and Stirling Hinchliffe MP to welcome our newest Australians. This is often the end of a long road to citizenship for many individuals and families and having the opportunity to both welcome and celebrate with them is definitely something special.

I also want to congratulate the 2021 Australia Day by the Bay performers and the local community that came out to get behind our Northside Talent! See the story below for some great pictures and a run down of the event!

Kind Regards,

In great news for the local footy community the Sandgate Hawks new five hundred and five metre fencing upgrade is complete!

With the new facelift the club is looking forward to a great 2021 and is ready to put the fence to good use.

The Hawks have been an outstanding local club and are always looking for interested players - from ages 3 through to 63 you can come and play footy at the Hawks, so pop down and say G'day!!

Also if you're between U8's and U12's and sign up soon the Hawks will provide a free footy to get your career started!

Citizenship Ceremony 2021 - Welcoming our newest Australians!

On January the 26th I was joined by both Anika Wells MP and Stirling Hinchliffe MP to welcome our newest Australians. A brilliant Welcome to Country was offered by one of our communities most respected elders, Uncle Joe Kirk, and the day went off without a hitch.

This is most usually the end of a long journey for so many families and individuals and is definitely worth celebrating. Taking the Oath of Affirmation these new Australians are set to be valuable members of both our local and wider national communities.

A special thanks to St Patricks College Shorncliffe for helping us to host this event.

Australia Day by the Bay - 2021

This year we once again had the chance to see some of the very best Northside musicians put on a show at the Einbunpin Lagoon.

With a great crowd and some even better performances the afternoon was a resounding success. Thanks to Beat Connection and our volunteers for making this event possible - giving opportunity to those within our own community while also providing quality live music is a win for all involved.

FREE Movie in the Park - Einbunpin Lagoon - Paper Planes

Great to see the local community welcome in the New Year with 2021’s first Movie in the Park!

With many young families coming down, the night went ahead as planned and was a perfect chance for locals and their children to join one another for a relaxed evening at Sandgate's stunning Einbunpin Lagoon.

We look forward to more events like these in the future - Stay tuned!!

Bowden Park Upgrades - Geebung

Upgrades are coming to one of Geebung's favourite local parks!

The planned works will provide better flood protection for the facilities and provide extra seating for parkgoers.

Work commenced on the 8th of February and is expected to continue for two weeks - weather permitting.

FYI - the playground will be closed during construction.

13th Anniversary of the National Apology

It’s always a pleasure to join Koobara Kindy for their annual breakfast, marking the anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s national apology for the stolen generation.

While it’s great to celebrate this very important day, it’s important to talk about how there is still a long way to go before we achieve proper reconciliation, and where better to have these discussions than at a place that educates our community’s future leaders.

Deagon Sportsground Park Project

As part of a larger Deagon Sportsground Park project I’m happy to announce new planting has been confirmed!

14 large trees will provide park goers with ample shade and make the space more practical and enjoyable for our local community.

The planting program (included intended species) can be seen below and is expected to be completed mid-March.

More news coming soon - stay tuned

Sue's Korner - Village Precinct Project

Almost three years after petitioning Council to add the iconic Sue's Korner shops to the Village Precinct Projects initiative its finally become a reality!!

With $1 Million funding secured the project looks to improve the amenity and accessibility of the 'Korner' with works that are expected to include:

- Footpath Upgrades
- Street Gardens, trees and furniture
- Potential Public Art installations
- Civil Works (Pedestrian medians, Kerb Ramps etc.)
Exciting news moving forward for Boondall!

Boondall Wetlands - Bike Path Upgrade

Various works have been undertaken over the past months with the aim to restore and rehabilitate the Boondall Wetlands Bikeway. This project primarily focussed upon restoring the 'boardwalk' sections of track.

The project was conducted over two periods:

(1) Wednesday, 9 December until Wednesday, 21 December 2020 and
(2) Monday, 11 January 2021 until Mid-January 2021

It's great to see work like this in such a valuable local area.

Nashville State School - School Leaders Induction Ceremony

In early February I had the chance to join Anika Wells MP in attending the induction of Nashville State School’s new student leaders.

It’s a great achievement for these young members of our community and something they should be very proud of - no doubt this is just the start for many of the future leaders in and around our community.
