Deagon Ward E-News

November 2018

Christmas is just around the corner now, but there is still plenty to do before the year is out.

October was a very busy month, with community events right across the Deagon Ward at schools, community groups and out in the community.

I have had the pleasure of celebrating the success of students at our local school awards nights at Bracken Ridge High, Sandgate High and St Pats over the last few weeks. These students and their families have a lot to be proud of.

There is some great environmental work going on around the community at the moment with events like the RAMSAR Anniversary Planting at Dowse Lagoon, new duck signs at Einbunpin Lagoon or the Cabbage Tree Creek clean up this weekend. While we are very lucky to have some amazing natural areas like our lagoons, Moreton Bay and the creek, it's important that they are managed and protected and the community is playing a significant role in doing that in our community.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Out and About in the Community

St Flannan's Official Opening of New Buildings

St Flannan's Primary School Zillmere officially opened and blessed their three new classrooms, administration block, outdoor learning space and learning support hub.

I was pleased to join Leanne Linard MP at the opening.

St Flannan’s is such a welcoming community - it’s great to see these new facilities to cater for a growing school.

Bracken Ridge High Awards Night

Well done to the high achievers at Bracken Ridge State High School who received awards last night. It’s great to see so many of the same students receiving sports and academic awards and also playing in the school band. Bracken Ridge produces some great all rounders!

School Captain Connor Robertson received a number of awards including School Dux! Well done to Connor and Annika on taking out the Jared Cassidy Award for Excellence in Science and Maths.

Diwali 2018 - Hindu Society of QLD

Hindu Society Of QLD's Gayatri Mandir hosted Diwali 2018 at Bracken Ridge High School. There were performances, food and a great community atmosphere.

I was pleased to speak on behalf of the community on a night marking the triumph of light over dark and good over evil. A wonderful message the whole community can live by.

St Patrick's College Night of Excellence

Well done to all of the academic achievement, excellence and special award winners recognised at St Patrick's College.

It’s great to see such a cross section of the boys achieving academically, on the sports field and then singing in the choir!

Outgoing school captain Daniel Champness gave a wonderful speech about the impact St Pats has had on him over his time and the importance of a great community around these young men.

Sandgate High Art Exhibition

The year 12 art students at Sandgate DSHS held their final exhibition today marking the end of a very successful year for the school. Out of hundreds of entrants, two students from Sandgate High have been chosen to show in Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art next year - a remarkable achievement!

Bramble Bay Culture in Community Outdoor Classroom Day

On November 1, the first Bramble Bay Culture in Community Outdoor Classroom Day was held at The Third (Bungwall) Lagoon.

Children from Kids on Craig, Bracken Ridge Kindy, Sparrow Early Learning, Sandgate Kids and Kids Capers participated today learning about bush tucker from Uncle Joe Kirk, native animals from the Nudgee Beach Education Centre and lots of other activities from Jabiru and Sandgate Library.

Sandgate High Awards Night

Sandgate High held their annual academic awards night where the best and brightest were awarded - and there were a lot of high achievers! Well done to school dux and school captain Tim Estreich!

Sandgate High has consistently performed very well when compared to other schools right across the state and the level of achievement from individual students shows why.

Music Fusion - Multitude Choir and the Swingalicious Big Band

Multitude Inc Choir was joined by The Swingalicious Big Band in the Sandgate Town Hall for their annual concert. It was great to see lots of locals joined by quite a few visitors to our community.

There were some very thoughtful questions. We are certainly in good hands for the future!

RAMSAR Planting - Dowse Lagoon

The Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association Inc RAMSAR planting took place at Dowse Lagoon on October 20. The aim of the event was to re-establish Dowse Lagoon as a Wetland of International Significance. The many plants planted on the day will now become homes for native insects and birds. Thanks to Geckos wildlife for their presence and help on the day.

Stirling Hinchliffe MP and I got our hands dirty alongside dozens of locals and visitors to the area.

Sandgate High - Connections Concert

Sandgate High held their annual Connections Concert on October 18 for residents of local retirement and aged care facilities.

This concert gives the students the opportunity to perform in front of a crowd and it's a great day out for the residents!

Stirling Hinchliffe MP and I have proudly sponsored this great event for the past three years.

Sunset Run 2018

Wet weather did not dampen the spirits of the hundreds of runners who took part in the Annual Sandgate Sunset Run, which was once again a very successful event in our local community.

Well done to the Deagon Ward Road Runners who pounded the pavement in two hours of rain at the event.

I've sponsored the team for the last three years and their lap count is getting better every year!

The Sandgate Hawks junior and youth presentation celebrated another successful season on October 12. It was great to join Stirling Hinchliffe MP to present a few perpetual awards to some very impressive players.

On October 7, the Hawks gathered and relived some of the 75 year history of the club last night. Squads of the decades were revealed and a book on the complete history of the club was launched.

Contact the club if you would like a copy of the book and make sure you keep supporting the Hawks to ensure we have this great club for years to come!

VMR Brisbane AGM

VMR Brisbane Inc held their AGM on October 2 and there are a few new faces on the Executive. A number of members were recognised for their service including David Massam for over 15 years and Joe McCoy who received life membership.

I was honoured to be asked to continue on as Patron alongside Stirling Hinchliffe MP and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart.

Cabbage Tree Creek Paddle Against Plastic (November 11)

The Paddle Against Plastic campaign moves to Cabbage Tree Creek courtesy of support from Spinnaker Sound Marina. Our aim will be to clean up the debris coming down the creek that is stuck in the mangroves and poses a huge threat to local wild and marine life.

Join us on your paddle craft of any type and hit the water in a fun family friendly event that is just like a treasure hunt, but a little different. We have a limited amount of craft available if you don't have one, just book a ticket in the registration process that includes the paddle craft you require. If there are no craft available, please keep an eye out as we will attempt to get additional craft from other people or come down anyway and clean along the banks.

The event will be hosted at VMR and they will be putting on a gold coin donation BBQ for lunch and the bar will be open to talk about all your treasure stories after the clean up.

Remembrance Day  (November 11)

Remembrance Day 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War. A war which began in August 1914, and saw Australians serve in some of the most significant conflicts including the Western Front, Middle East, North Africa and Gallipoli.

The commitment Australians made to the First World War is staggering. Australia's population was less than 5 million and 416,809 of them enlisted. Over 60,000 died and 156,000 were either gassed, wounded or taken prisoner.

The toll on a small community like that of Sandgate and surrounds at the time would have been palpable and personal.

We will pause this Sunday, November 11 to remember those who have fallen or suffered in all conflicts. Please join the community at one of our local services on Sunday.

The Sandgate RSL Sub Branch Service will commence at 10.30AM in memorial Park Sandgate.

The Geebung RSL Service will commence at 10.50AM at the Geebung RSL.

"The Princess Bride" - Sandgate Cinema Club (November 11)

The next exciting chapter in the Sandgate Cinema Club story is about to be told, as we get ready to screen the movie classic “The Princess Bride”. This film is not your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale – that’s a promise!

Get dressed up (or not – just saying) We will be starting the night with a bonus short film, some complementary finger food, movie trivia, and loads of unexpected fun. What’s the catch? Well’s a MEMBERS ONLY event.

Not a member (yet?) Don’t Panic! A 12-month membership is a pitiful $55. Do the math – that’s less than $5.00 a month for a great movie night in the village. Inconceivable !! Don’t miss out, when they're gone… (it’s the pit of despair for you)
