Deagon Ward E-News

September 2020

G'day,

September has been a month full of surprises, from pop up concerts in Deagon to DA applications in Boondall, Deagon Ward is well and truly back into the swing of things.

COVID restrictions have eased across all LGA's in Queensland with groups of up to thirty people being able to gather in homes and public spaces. Summer BBQ's are most definitely back on the cards and it's great to see the community engaging in a more normal and comfortable manner.

In other news the Sandgate Youth Festival finalists have been announced and will now proceed to their performance night on the 10th of October. The event will be live streamed over the Festivals Facebook page between six and nine pm. It's a great opportunity to kick back and enjoy the very best young talent our area has to offer!

Tune in here.

We also got to attend an adapted 'Greek Affair' festival this year at the St Paraskevi Orthodox Church. Put together by Father Panagiotis, Costa and a host of volunteers I was excited to be able to visit with our local member Stirling Hinchliffe MP and enjoy all things Greek!

I was also lucky enough to attend the Brisbane Volunteer Marine Rescue AGM. A great organisation that strives to keep our boaties and bay users safe I am proud to announce I will once again be returning as the clubs Patron.

The work they do at VMR stretches far beyond that of which you would generally expect of a marine rescue unit. Running a wide variety of community events year in and year out takes a lot of effort and something all of us here in the Deagon Ward can appreciate.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

A Greek Affair - St Paraskevi's Greek Orthodox Church

The annual Greek Affair festival at St Paraskevi was a great chance to get out and about this September. With a variety of genuine Greek food and culture on display the festival lived up to its billing as one of the best cultural events to attend on the Northside.

A big thanks to Father Panagiotis, Costa and all the volunteers who made the Festival possible this year in trying circumstances.

Volunteer Marine Rescue AGM

In late September the AGM for Brisbane Volunteer Marine rescue was held at their Shorncliffe base.

It's been a challenging year for the VMR and despite the challenges of COVID they have continued to recruit new members and volunteers and have nearly doubled their Waterside Assist Membership. All serving to keep our bay safer than ever.

Now numbering 97 active male and female members the VMR both hosts and assists with a wide range of local community events. Some of these include the Ocean Crusaders paddle against plastic, Summer Safety Expo, Jingle By The Bay, Bribie Island Christmas Light Parade, Christmas Carols Food Truck Event, Australia Day by the Bay and the Polynesian Outrigger Canoe Regatta.

These community activities are in addition to the 2767 hours of volunteer time crews spent on the water assisting people.

A proud local institution Stirling Hinchliffe and Jared Cassidy were named as Patrons once again in 2020.

Development Application - GYG Boondall

In early September the news broke that beloved local restaurant Sultans will be closing its doors for the final time. While losing a valuable local business a development application has been lodged for the site by Guzman Y Gomez.

Is this something you would like to see in Boondall?

For more information on the application see here.

Brisbane Festival - Street Serenades

The Street Serenades program hit Brisbane neighbourhoods throughout September with residents getting treated to a variety of great performances!

In Deagon the Dreggs music put on a impressive show in Stanley park, playing for a small crowd on a purpose built 'trailer-stage.' Talented musicians playing local gigs in our parks is a rarity and it was certainty special to see local talent showcased as well.

See below for the Dreggs!  👇

Brighton Wellness Hub Activities

All in-person Wellness Hub activities have been cancelled until 4 October.

A virtual event will be held Monday 21 September, please see the details below:

World Clean-Up day - 19th of September

World Clean - up day was a success in the Deagon Ward on the back of some generous volunteers that gave up their weekend to lend a hand.

The Deagon Ward Office had half a dozen clean up kits picked up by families around the Ward. Not only helping to clean up around our streets but setting a good example for their kids and those around them.

We'd like to thank those that got involved and encourage others in the community to give it a crack next year!

Boondall Barracuda's - Funding secured

The Boondall Barracuda's amateur swimming club is a fantastic local organisation coming into a new summer season of swimming.

Through the work of Stirling Hinchliffe MP and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the club has been able to gain brand new starting blocks and a variety of other pool and training equipment.

If you would like more information on the club or would like to get involved they can be found here.
