Deagon Ward E-News

Christmas 2016

Christmas is just around the corner and after a very busy festive season I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It has been a privilege serving as local councillor over the last year and I look forward to working with residents in the diverse suburbs that make up the Deagon Ward in 2017.

Over this past year I have had the opportunity to work closely with many residents, community groups, schools, churches and other levels of government. The community we live in is very special with people who look out for each other. Christmas can be a tough time for some people - so if you see someone struggling please lend a hand.

My office will reopen on Monday January 9. If you have any urgent Council enquiries before then you can call council's 24 hour contact centre on 3403 8888. For any storm emergencies the SES can be contacted on 132 500.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events over the New Year.

Cheers & Merry Christmas

Jared Cassidy

Out and About in the Community

SANDBAG Community Christmas

My office was filled with gifts generously donated by locals to be used at the annual SANDBAG Community Christmas Lunch. Thanks to everyone who donated a present, food or who will help out on the day. There are a lot of people out there who will be spending Christmas Day alone and SANDBAG gives them a home for the day - such an important thing.

Zillmere Community Centre Christmas Party

The Annual Zillmere Community Centre Christmas party was popular again with hundreds of families coming through the centre for lunch, children's activities and a visit from Santa. The Centre doesn't get much of a break over Christmas with housing and social services continuing right through. Thank you to Sharon and the team for your hard work throughout the entire year.

South Pacific Islander Christmas

Each year the various South Pacific Island communities gather in Mulbeam Park for the South Pacific Island Christmas Festival. Organised by the Tongan Wesleyan Methodist Church each year, this festival bring together the diverse community here on the northside to celebrate Christmas together. Satika and her team put in so much effort and have seen this event grow each year. Can't wait until next year!

Carols by the Bay

I was thrilled to join with Wayne Swan and Stirling Hinchliffe to ensure that Sandgate's annual Carols by the Bay continued this year. After Rotary Sandgate closed we decided to work with the local schools and community groups to make sure this event carried on. Thank you to the hundreds of local families who came along and joined in this year. This event was bigger than ever and really showed the fantastic Christmas spirit we have here!

What's Coming Up...

Australia Day By The Bay
Wayne Swan and I have teamed up once again for Australia Day by the Bay 2017! Next year there will be a few changes to the program which will see three distinct events on throughout the day. We will be hosting a stand-alone citizenship ceremony in the Sandgate Town Hall in the morning, an Aussie BBQ in the park at lunch time and billycart races in the afternoon, sponsored by Stirling Hinchliffe. We hope to see you on Australia Day!
