June 2018

The last month has been a busy one out and about in the community with Dogs Day Out, Red Shield Appeal, Rock Under the Clock, Biggest Morning Tea, Salvos Twilight Markets, Walk to School Day, art shows and much more! There are plenty of local events coming up this month with more details below.

Council's Homeless Connect is an annual event that brings together businesses and community groups at a one-day event to give free services to people experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness. My office is a collection point for non-perishable food items up until June 15.

The 2018 Einbunpin Festival will be held on July 29 and is shaping to be another great celebration of our community. Now in it's 27th year, the Festival will have 4 stage areas, art activities, free children's activities and hundreds of community and local business stalls. Check out the festival website for details on our competitions and activities. We have lots of opportunities for new festival volunteers this year from entertainment and activities volunteers to bump-in and bump-out and also helping with our festival survey on the day. If you would like to be involved, please let my office know and we will get in touch.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Out and About in the Community

Shorncliffe State School Active School Travel

Congratulations to Shorncliffe State School on a massive turnout for their 'Walk to School Day' on May 11. Their efforts will go towards retaining the 'Bramble Bay Active School Travel' Trophy. The Trophy is awarded to the Active School Travel School which has the highest percentage of active school travel each term.

The Students enjoyed a whole school breakfast following their walk - well done Shorncliffe!

'Black Tree, White Rock' Artrageous Art Exhibition

Artrageous' very own artist in residence, Shane Rodwell, launched his month long exhibition on May 11. The exhibition, called 'Black Tree White Rock', had a successful launch with pieces flying off the walls. Gallery 4017 played host to this wonderful celebration of our community's artistic flair. I'm looking forward to the next show, Water Logged by Marieta Hanaghan, launching on June 8 at 6.30PM.

Walk To School Safely Week, St Kieran's Primary School

On Friday May 18, I joined teachers, parents and students of St Kieran’s in their community initiative to raise awareness of the health, road and transport safety, and environmental benefits of regularly walking to school. We have great local schools and I encourage everyone to get behind Walk To School Safely Week, whether it be through walking your kids to school or just taking a little more care when driving through school zones.

Salvation Army Twilight Markets

I always enjoy holding a stall at The Salvation Army Twilight Markets. It's a great way to catch up with residents out in their community. The markets last month were well attended and all for a good cause. From pony rides to homebake goodies, residents who came along were treated to a broad variety of stalls and activities.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

Once again this year, the Deagon Ward office hosted a Biggest Morning Tea event in support of the Cancer Council. On May 24, members of the community feasted on some baked goodies and raised awareness for the work of the Cancer Council over a 'cuppa' tea. Together, we raised over $400 for cancer research. Thank you to those who came along!

Dogs Day Out

Once again, we joined with our four-legged friends for the Dog’s Day Out at Brighton! Gathering at Decker Park from 8.00AM on Sunday May 27, there were information stalls from the Animal Welfare League QldShamroq - Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute Rescue of Qld Inc. and Brighton Dog Groomers.

We participated in a group dog walk along the foreshore and all proceeds from the small entry fee went to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland, who run the re-homing center at Bracken Ridge for Council. Bramble Bay Lions also be cooked a BBQ on the day. We raised around $650 on the day for the Animal Welfare League - a great outcome!

4017 Says No To DV

We had a wonderful night in Sandgate last week marching with Stirling Hinchliffe MP and many members of the community to say NO to domestic violence. Thanks to SANDBAG for organising this event once again and leading the ongoing community conversation. Following the event SANDBAG launched a new sticker campaign to raise awareness in the community. You can collect a sticker from my office to show your support for this campaign.

Sandgate Canoe Club - Wetlands Wander

The annual Sandgate Canoe Club Inc. Wetlands Wander was held over the weekend on Cabbage Tree Creek with around 130 competitors from as far away as Melbourne! The club has grown over the last few years and now have a brand new junior club too.

It's great to see such strong numbers, particularly from the new junior section - shows how much potential our amazing creek and foreshore has!
