“Can I use the COPM with a client group at the same time?”

This is a common question we receive and the answer is - yes, you can! The following example will illustrate how one interdisciplinary team in Australia did this.

A group of children and youth aged 9 to 17 years who had enrolled in an intensive interdisciplinary group pain program, using the COPM as an initial assessment, independently identified their own occupational issues. They rated the importance of each issue, selected the top three issues and determined their performance and satisfaction with each issue. Then, with the assistance of their therapist, the performance issues were broken into their component parts, which became their individual treatment goals.

The authors report that the children and youth, who found the COPM easy to use, enjoyed this client-centered approach. It allowed them to reflect on their occupation problems, and generate meaningful (to them) goals. While some struggled with prioritizing occupational problems and some clinicians thought that the children and youth might have missed an important issue (whose important issue?), overall, it was a positive experience for the children and youth, and the interdisciplinary team.
