Can other health professionals (health team members) use the COPM?

Yes, they can.

Published research demonstrates the COPM was used in a number of studies, to gather and clarify rehabilitation team client goals as identified by the client. Verhoef and colleagues (2013a and 2013b) used the COPM in the development and evaluation of a multidisciplinary intervention to improve work participation of young adults with physical disabilities. Disciplines included occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, psychology and social work. The COPM was the initial intake assessment and the program consisted of group and individual coaching sessions. Results show increased engagement in occupational performance across self-care, work and leisure as well as significant changes in employment status two years after the intervention.

Key Messages on this topic:
  • Professionals other than occupational therapists (OTs) may use the COPM in the context of client assessment.
  • It is preferable if an OT is involved with/on the team using the COPM with clients.
  • Anyone using the COPM should have completed appropriate education and training related to the foundational theories of the COPM and the manner in which the full process should be undertaken (being client-centred, occupation-centred, and evidence based).
  • Used in this way, the COPM improves team communication and fosters continuity and person-centred care throughout the care journey.
