All Are Welcome

Let us build a house where love can dwell
and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell
how hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions,
rock of faith and vault of grace;
here the love of Christ shall end divisions.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak,
and words are strong and true,
where all God’s children dare to seek
to dream God’s reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness
and as symbol of God’s grace;
here as one we claim the faith of Jesus.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where love is found
in water, wine and wheat:
a banquet hall on holy ground
where peace and justice meet.
Here the love of God, through Jesus,
is revealed in time and space;
as we share in Christ the feast that frees us.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach
beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,
and live the Word they’ve known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
bear the image of God’s face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger.
All are welcome, all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.

Let love be real, in giving and receiving,
Without the need to manage and to own;
A haven free from posing and pretending,
Where every weakness may be safely known.
Give me your hand, along the desert pathway,
Give me your love wherever we may go.
As God loves us, so let us love each other;
With no demands, just open hands and space to grow.

Let love be real, not grasping or confining,
That strange embrace that holds yet sets us free;
That helps us face the risk of truly living,
And makes us brave to be what we might be.
Give me your strength when all my words are weakness;
Give me your love in spit e of all you know.
As God loves us, so let us love each other;
With no demands, just open hands and space to grow.

Let love be real, with no manipulation,
No secret wish to harness or control;
Let us accept each other’s incompleteness,
And share the joy of learning to be whole.
Give me your hope through dreams and disappointments
Give me your trust when all my failings show.
As God loves us, so let us love each other;
With no demands, just open hands and space to grow.
A note from Elizabeth………..
I might not have been the only one who felt a tiny bit teary at the announcement of the death of Vera Lynn this week. Perhaps lock down makes one a little more emotional, but it feels as if that entire generation of stalwarts of the 2nd World War have slowly diminished and soon there will be no one left who has a personal recollection of that time in our history. As The Times wrote “The haunting tones of the Forces’ Sweetheart were fine and sweet things in a world of unprecedented ugliness.” She was a symbol of resilience and hope.
Even in these lock down times her music seems to have played a part in uplifting us. Early on in lock down the Queen echoed words and sentiments from one of her songs in a message to the nation in April- “We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again.”
Our VE Day online worship was edited with words from another song she made famous ”There’ll be love and laughter and peace ever after, tomorrow when the world is free.”

I cannot compare these lock down restrictions to a World War but we have all been challenged with new regimes, restrictions and routines. As I write, there has been a newsflash that the UK’s Corona virus alert level has been downgraded from four to three. Good news indeed!
It certainly feels as if we are moving forward. We will count the toll this has taken on our lives and our country and the world but it does indeed begin to feel as if ‘”we will meet again.” We are grateful for all who have been similar symbols of resilience and hope in these strange times.

……. and a hymn for today………..

Fathers and mothers,
sisters and brothers,  all those who love us,
for whom we care:
help and befriend them,
keep and defend them,
Jesus our Saviour, this is our prayer.

And for those others,
fathers and mothers, children who hunger,
they must be fed:
we would be caring,
readily sharing,
one with another our daily bread.

Sisters and brothers,
fathers and mothers, we who together
offer our praise:
hear our thanksgiving,
God ever living,
may we walk with you all of our days.

                                                                            Timothy Dudley Smith

…and a prayer for us all………..

Heavenly Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless those fathers, who have taken upon themselves the responsibility of parenting.
Bless those who have suffered bereavement  ... or divorce and who are parenting their children alone. Let us uphold those fathers who have lost a child, and continue to hold them in their heart. Strengthen and support all of them by your love. And let us give thanks for those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
