Blindman stood by the road and he cried,

Blindman stood by the road and he cried,
blindman stood by the road and he cried,
blindman stood by the road and he cried,
he cried, ‘Sho-w, show me the wa-y,
show me the wa-y, show me the wa-y,
the way to go ho-me.’

We all stand by the road and we cry,
we all stand by the road and we cry,
we all stand by the road and we cry,
we cry ‘Sho-w, show us the wa-y,
show us the wa-y, show us the wa-y,
the way to go ho-me.’

Jesus stands by the road and he cries,
Jesus stands by the road and he cries,
Jesus stands by the road and he cries,
he cries, ‘I…I…I, I am the wa-y,
I am the tru-th,  I am the li-fe,
come follow me ho-me….JESUS!
Beauty for Brokenness

Beauty for brokenness
Hope for despair
Lord, in the suffering
This is our prayer
Bread for the children
Justice, joy, peace
Sunrise to sunset
Your kingdom increase!

God of the poor
Friend of the weak
Give us compassion we pray
Melt our cold hearts
Let tears fall like rain
Come, change our love
From a spark to a flame

Shelter for fragile lives
Cures for their ills
Work for the craftsman
Trade for their skills
Land for the dispossessed
Rights for the weak
Voices to plead the cause
Of those who can't speak

Refuge from cruel wars
Havens from fear
Cities for sanctuary
Freedoms to share
Peace to the killing-fields
Scorched earth to green
Christ for the bitterness
His cross for the pain

This week we saw the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain on 15th September. We commemorated the event with Alrewas and District Royal British legion last Sunday with an Act of Remembrance in the churchyard. It followed our morning service which as set by the lectionary readings had a theme of forgiveness. We were grateful that we were able to share fellowship; to give thanks for our history, our friends, our country and most of all, to remember.
The entire event was a most moving occasion. If you have missed it you will be able to catch the commemorations by clicking on the link below.

I learned later that day by a telephone call from a family member in Fife that there had been a modern day scramble from RAF Leuchars. Two typhoon euro fighters scrambled from the airfield and went off at full power and intercepted a Russian aircraft. So it still goes on.
There are few left who remember the airfield at RAF Lichfield; I imagine the scrambles were just the same. It is part of our history.

We pledged in that service of thanksgiving and remembrance to pray for the RAF in its continuing service and its vital contribution to the defence of the realm and of our allies, to the peace of the world and for its continuing resilience and resourcefulness. We celebrate the gifts that we now enjoy because of them and all who served and continue to serve.

Thanks!
………..to all who helped with the Churchyard Clear up on 12th September. Such a lot of hard work was put in to making the churchyard look so good. It was much admired at our special Service to commemorate the Battle of Britain. Grateful thanks to all who participated!

……….and to all who offered hospitality and welcome at the Ride and Stride. The welcome was much appreciated by the cyclists who took part especially as many churches were not open this year.

Congratulations to David Anderton who participated in the Ride and Stride on our behalf; he visited 10 churches and cycled 54 kilometres and raised £340 (without Gift Aid).
St Stephen’s will receive half of the money David raises for the Trust. Thank you David!
(David would like to thank everyone for the welcome he received as he completed his cycle ride and for all the sponsorship).

Harvest at Home
This year because of the Covid 19 pandemic and restrictions we are not able to hold our traditional Harvest Supper. This has been a major fundraiser in the past and an occasion for fellowship and celebration of community. Our idea this year is to celebrate ‘Harvest at Home’.

Thank you to all those who have offered to do an ‘At Home’. And this could be lunch, supper or afternoon tea! We have declared October to be our ‘Harvest month’!
Maybe willing volunteers would host a mini (less than 6) Harvest Supper in their own home among their family or social bubble and ask your guests for a fee to donate to ‘Harvest at Home’ for church funds?  Tim Chamberlin has offered to record some entertainment which would be played as an online link during the evening.
If you are happy to host an ‘At Home’ without infringing any Government rules or compromising your own safety please let Julia Usher know. (07718 077868)
(All dependent, of course, on the ever changing guidelines as these arise)

If you would like to stand as Church Warden, PCC Member or Deanery Synod Representative then please complete one of the forms at the back of Church.

Prayer Trail
During lock down a Prayer Trail has been developed with four stations around the Churchyard and one in Church. Each numbered station has been marked up now with a pallet board. Do pick up a leaflet from the Porch and make your own reflection as you spend time at each site.

Food Bank
Thank you to all who continue to support the Food Bank. There is even greater demand for assistance in the current crisis. Donations can now be left in Church. Their latest needs are:
Tinned tuna       Tinned vegetables          Biscuits                                Tinned fruit

“We’re Good To Go” is the official UK mark to signal that we have follow Government COVID-19 guidelines and has a process in place to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing. We have successfully applied for the ‘Good to Go’ Industry standard and this has been granted.

Worship in Church
We are committed to keeping everyone who enters our building, and those who worship in it, safe. We have introduced a number of new measures to ensure this happened as we reopened for private prayer and reflection. Now we are continuing with the directive issued by The Church of England and Lichfield Diocese to implement further measure as public worship resumes.
  • Please keep to a social distance of 2 metres. Please note that face coverings are now mandatory in public buildings unless you fall into one of the exemption categories.
