Message from the Curate:
Hello dear friends,
We've had a glorious spring and now, as summer begins, the grass in the churchyard shows just how hot and dry the weather has been.  As a village we are all set to enjoy a wonderful celebration of our community spirit: our 26th Open Gardens festival.  A glorious weekend of appreciating the wonder of God’s creation, revealed through crafts, delicious treats and of course beautiful gardens.  Just as grass and flowers need water to flourish, with dry weather meaning many a late night with a hosepipe, we too need to be regularly refreshed on our journeys.
As church we continue to pray for one another; we seek God when our faith is overflowing and when it may feel dry and parched like the churchyard grass.  As we journey together there are times when we feel close to God; the mountain top moments when our faith is well-watered and overflowing with joy.  There will also be times when God feels distant, the dry-valley moments when God seems absent.
There can be a tendency to want our lives to be smooth and predictable, like a railway track where the ups and downs are levelled out and tunnels help us through mountains.  Yet a smooth life is not life in its fullest as Jesus intends us to live.  The peaks and troughs of life are what make it rich and rewarding.  We grow as we journey.  We cannot do this alone; nor should we try to.  As community, we look to those of us on the mountain tops to keep us going. God is with us in the good times (like England leading 5-0 at half-time), and, whilst God may feel absent in the bad times, our Lord and Creator is always with us. So often it’s only with the benefit of hindsight that we realise God was there all along…
So when you’re next sat on your deckchair, enjoying the glorious summer sunshine with a glass of Prosecco (other drinks are available!) in your hand, I invite you to offer a quick prayer of thanks for your journey of faith so far, and to pray for those who are experiencing drought, that God’s inimitable love may refresh them and refill them, inspiring them to (re)start their own journey, as together we Follow Christ in the footsteps of St Chad.
Love and Blessings
Curate Chris

Alrewas bells in WW1 remembrance
John Spence Crutchley was born in Barton under Needwood in 1889, but subsequently his parents Joel and Sarah moved to Marsh Farm, Fradley.  Here they took up farming and John eventually started to work with them on this family farm.
On 15 January 1915 John enlisted in Lichfield into the Royal Regiment of Artillery and became a driver of the 103rd Brigade.  He had given his trade as that of a waggoner.  Whilst on leave in December 1916 he married Lilly Noseworthy in St Giles Church, Whittington.
His war service included being sent to France on 25 August 1915 and being in action at Ypres.  He was then sent to Italy with the XIV Corps to strengthen the Italian troops who were fighting the Austrian Army at Asiago.  During World War 1 Italy was on the British side in fighting the Germans and Austrians.  However, following a night-out on 28 July 1918 when off duty, John accidentally drowned in the River Asiago whilst going back to base in a heavy rainstorm.
John was buried in the Dueville Cemetery Extension to the civilian cemetery close to the front line.  His widow Lily was awarded the 1914/15 Star medal, the Victory and British medals, as well as a pension of 13 shillings and nine pence a week (£0.69, which is equivalent to £35.97 per week in today’s money).
During the early afternoon of Friday 28 July 2018, the bells of All Saints Church, Alrewas, will be rung to a quarter peal to commemorate the centenary of John’s death.  This ringing will last about an hour.

The Methodists have had a Whale of a Time!

During June, the congregation at the Methodist Church joined with Methodist Churches across the country in "Bible Month".
Each Sunday we studied a chapter of Jonah - and found so many encouraging themes about our relationship with God, and about how we can call on God at all times - even when we are in the depths of despair!
