BIBLE FUN TRAIL – SATURDAY 21ST APRIL – 10.30 – 12.30

Come and experience the Alrewas Bible Fun Trail!

The Fun Trail will start outside the COOP, and end at the Methodist Church in Post Office Road – taking you via exhibits representing familiar Bible stories.  Along the route you will see art work created by village residents of all ages, including depictions of the life and ministry of Jesus in All Saints Church.  At the Methodist Church you will have the chance to see Easter Gardens made by local children – and to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus as you enjoy hot cross buns and a hot drink.
More details will be available nearer the time – please keep looking out for information – and join us on the day for this exciting event!

There will be no charge for the event, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Christingle Candle Collection

During the First Sunday service in December, we gave out Christingle Collection Candles to the congregation.
We would like to say a big. big thank you to everyone who collected all their loose change over Christmas and returned the candles to us. We have raised almost £80  for The Children's Society, just by this little act of kindness.
Once again, thank you to all who helped and if anyone would like a Children's Society collection box, to save change throughout the year, then please let us know.

Alrewas bells in WW1 remembrance

John Roberts, who was the son of William and Hannah Roberts, was born in 1878 in Barton-under-Needwood.  After his marriage in 1909 to Elizabeth Musto, he and his wife came first to live at Lupin Bank, Orgreave, and then to Overley Cottage, Orgreave.  They had two children: Edith Dorothy, born on 21 September 1909 and Ernest John, born on 10 April 1914.

John, who was a postman, enlisted in Lichfield as a Private in one of the North Staffordshire Regiment’s battalions.  Subsequently he transferred to another North Staffordshire battalion in June 1916 and was again transferred in October of that year to the Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment.  Whereas the battalions of the North Staffordshire, in which he had initially served, were home defence or reserve battalions, the Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment was posted to the Western Front.

By 1917, the Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment was on the Flanders Coast and, consequently, was involved in many battles.  One such battle in October of that year was the Battle of Poelcappelle (today spelt as Poelkapelle), which is a village in Flanders about 5 miles north-east of Ypres.

The following year of 1918 opened with the action at Estaires, France, as well as the Battle of Messines in Belgium.  Both these battles took place near to the French/Belgium border.  It was during the Battle of Messines that John sustained wounds to his head and chest from which he died on 12 April 1918 in the casualty clearing station.  He was buried in the Godwaersvelde British Cemetery, which is close to the town of Poperinge, Belgium.

John’s widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week for herself and the two children.  She also received the British and Victory Medals on 14 August 1921.

At 7pm on Thursday 12 April 2018, the Alrewas bell ringers will commemorate the centenary of John Roberts’ death by ringing a quarter peal on the bells of All Saints Church.  This ringing will last about an hour.

Save money and give a gift to All Saints Church - To celebrate their 130th anniversary, Ecclesiastical Insurance are offering a very generous £130 to All Saints Church for every insurance policy taken out by our church members through to Oct 31st 2018.

Fradley News

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Churchyard Clearup or participated in the Cancer Research coffee morning last Saturday 10 March.  Over 15 persons brought their gardening utensils and cut back holly, raked up leaves, cleared away Christmas wreaths and weeded graves, filled subsided ground with soil, cut down dead trees, cleared drains and gutters and brushed paths in anticipation of Easter. They were also able to share a chat over a cup of coffee and piece of cake with people attending the coffee morning.  Well over £130 was raised for Cancer Research from the sale of coffee, cake and the beautiful craft items by Knitwits.  In addition congratulations to Cindy Davies who completed the Florette 10K on Mothering Sunday 11 March for Cancer Research in memory of her mother and raised in excess of £750.  It was a most successful weekend of community effort and spirit.

PCC and Church Officers
It’s nearly time to elect our Churchwardens for 2018.
Churchwardens are an ancient office in the Church and take a lead in assisting the Vicar, and leading the Congregation.
As we move closer to our AGM in April, please give some prayerful thought to any gifts and talents you may have to offer as Churchwarden, PCC member, Safeguarding Officer, and Deanery Synod Rep.
We would be delighted to welcome you on board if you feel you could fulfil one of these roles.
