Fradley News

Battle of Britain Remembrance Service
The service on Sunday 17 September at St. Stephen’s Church was conducted by The Revd. Prebendary John Allan, Vicar of Alrewas with Fradley and Wychnor, and Hon. Padre of Alrewas and District  RBL  and was attended by 150 people including 30 children.  There were also representatives from Royal British Legion, Staffordshire County Council, Lichfield District Council, Fradley and Alrewas Parish Councils and the Mayor and Sheriff of Lichfield
The talk was given by Mr. Terry Finn (Ex-RAF, and current President of Alrewas and District RBL), who had visited many of the Fradley Village uniformed groups during the week before, to give them insights into the Battle of Britain – and a good many members of these uniformed groups chose to attend the service with their families!
The 1206 Squadron Air Cadets gave their usual excellent ‘Guard of Honour’ welcome to all who came to the service, and very respectfully read out the numerous names of the Roll of Honour as we remembered and gave thanks for those who gave their tomorrow for our today.
I believe it was one of the best attended, and most moving and memorable services of its kind in many years, and huge thanks to Ed and Annette Gould – as well as all the leadership of Alrewas and District RBL – for the amazing work they did in order to make this service so special for everyone.

Best Kept Churchyard 2017
On Saturday 18 November Jackie Campbell, Dorothy Giles, Joan Lee and Julia Usher attended the Lichfield Diocese Best Kept Churchyard Competition Awards Scheme in Blymhill Village Hall near Weston-under-Lizard.   It was the first time that St. Stephen’s Church had entered the competition so we were delighted to receive a Gold Award for St. Stephen’s Churchyard.  The award was presented by Harriet Carty, director of ‘Caring for God’s Acre’.  In addition we were thrilled to receive an award for a ‘Nature Friendly’ Churchyard.
For years volunteers have been improving the churchyard with Spring and Autumn churchyard clear ups by cutting back the yew trees and hedges, pulling off ivy and weeding graves, planting bulbs and clearing debris from paths.  Fradley with Streethay Parish Council have also provided much needed help with summer time mowing while the Commonwealth War Grave Commission have maintained the 33 war graves from RAF Lichfield to a very high standard
The competition however stipulated that there should be a wildlife area so this spring local gardening enthusiast Jackie Campbell designed the area and Lichfield Explorers-Lancaster Unit implemented this by digging frog ponds, moving earth, creating log and stone piles and building insect and hedgehog shelters.
Thank you to everyone who has helped to maintain our churchyard.  It was a GOLDEN effort.

Fradley Heritage Group
This new community group in Fradley needs your support.
Fradley Heritage Group is made up of 3 sub-groups: Fradley History Society, Fradley Cultural Society and Fradley Environment Group. We are currently pushing forward with the History Society and are looking for villagers to get involved and help in any way they can. Our main interest areas are RAF Lichfield, the Coventry Canal and old buildings/houses in Fradley.
The Cultural Society is aiming to start a youth club for kids between 10-15 years old on a Friday evening, at Fradley Youth & Community Centre. This needs a lot more support from residents before it can start. If you could help in any way no matter how small, please contact us.
The Environment group is yet to get going as we need someone to lead on this. There is plenty of support and funding available to allow projects to be completed and we have a fantastic opportunity to follow in the foot-steps of the hugely successful Whittington & Fisherwick Environment Group so please contact Simon Roberts on 01543 444470 or 07709 433493
