24 February 2016
Tena koutou katoa

As we are now up and running with the school year, holidays may seem a distant memory!  We do have just a few reminders for you in order to help us make sure that everyone is in the right place at the right time, and doing the right thing!
  • Please ensure that you ring the school office if there are a change of plans to your child/ren's bus arrangements, regardless if it is a 'one off' or a regular plan.
  • Please ring the school office if your child is absent from the school.  You also need to give a reason for the absence as all absences have to be coded according to the Ministry of Education's system.
  • If you are taking your own vehicle or driving a school van for a school trip we need you to fill in one of our Driver Forms at the office. You will also need to bring your license for us to copy and keep on file for future reference.
  • Please make sure you sign your child in if you are late, and out if you are taking them before 3pm.
A belated congratulations to our House Captains and their deputies who have been appointed to their roles.  I have no doubt that these students are a strong group of leaders who will provide excellent role models to our younger students.

As you have seen from the calendar below we are offering you the opportunity to come and visit our school in action on March 1 between 9am and 11am.  We are wanting you to see how we operate on a 'normal' school day - how our spaces, teachers and children are all working.  You will be given a 'guided' tour by senior students who will be able to give you a commentary of what is going on.  It would be wonderful to see you on the 1st!

Have a great week

House Captains and Deputies:
(L to R) Ria Dennison, William Smillie, Ella Cochrane, Jessica Smaill, Sam Slee, Amy Hawkins, Dan Patterson, Casidhe Harrop, Angus Smith.
(Absent was Katy Tyrrell)
TUAKANA BIKE TRIP LAST WEEK
A BIG thank you to the parents (and grandparents) who accompanied the Tuakana Hub on their bike trip to the winery last Friday.  It was wonderful seeing all the smiling faces arrive back at school after the trip!
A reminder that Swimming Sports are this Thursday.  The 5-7 year olds will swim from 11am and the 8-12 year olds from 1pm.
The Friends of the School will be running a BBQ at lunchtime (12pmish) - $2 for a sausage in bread, $2 for a muffin/slice. Children are asked to give their orders to the teachers at the start of the day please. Parents and other supporters - you can buy directly from the BBQ during the lunch break.
PART TIME CLEANER
required at the school on Mondays and Thursdays - likely to be for a few weeks (Maybe til the end of term).
Hours are 3pm-5.30pm.
Please contact Deidre at school for further information (4360 660)

INTERSCHOOL CRICKET
As you read this I will be in Dunedin with the Girls Cricket team in a game against St Hilda's for the NZ Post Shield.
Our boys lost yesterday in their Round 2 game against Maniototo Area School.  Well done boys - to have made it to the second round was an accomplishment in itself!
Year Seven Vision Screening
The Vision and Hearing Technicians from Public Health South will be visiting our school on March 15th to screen all Year 7 students for distance vision and colour vision (boys only).
  • Distance Vision (Amblyopia & Hyperopia)
This determines how well your child is able to see at a distance. It involves reading an eye chart. (Not required if chid wears glasses)
  • Colour Vision (boys only)
This is to detect children with the most common inherited colour vision defects. (Using the, Ishihara colour vision book) This screen is still available to those wearing glasses.
If you DO NOT wish your child to be screened please fill out an opt-out slip, which are available at the school office before their visit.
