6 July 2016

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

Student Led Learning Conferences
Thank you to you all for coming and sharing in the celebration of your children's work and progress at the Student Led Learning Conferences on Monday night.  It was wonderful to see every child interacting with you as parents and caregivers, and you giving them your undivided attention to hear from their point of view, as to how they are going.  The observations that the teachers made (and heard) were that the children were very accurate in what they shared.

Thank you also to those of you who took the time to give us your feedback and ideas as to the reporting processes and the learning spaces.  I'm very appreciative of the detail that most of you provided, and this enables us to have really clear feedback and constructive comments.

Please remember that you don't need to wait for formal reporting times to find out about how your child's learning is progressing.  Teachers are available at times that suit, to meet with you, or to talk with you on the phone.  Family/Whanau connections are important for a number of reasons.  These connections keep you informed, remind your child that we are all in a partnership for them, and the teacher can gain an insight into things that they might not see at school. Teachers will continue with their phone calls - ensuring that each child has a phone call each term, as an update to you on their learning.

Looking ahead . . .
A 'heads up' for  a couple of notes that will come home on the first day of next term.

The Upper Waitaki Schools' cross country at Omarama will take place on Thursday August 4th from 10am.  As usual this is a day where we encourage families to bring their children, cheer everyone on and support all those there. Children do not return to school after the event.  A note to assist us organise transport will come home on the first day of Term 3.

We are going to start to give you the option to 'pre-order' your children's orders for sausage sizzles - for the term.  A sheet will come home where you can order these and pay for them at the beginning - and not have to worry about Thursday lunches for the rest of the term.  The Term 2 & 3 BBQs are school-wide fundraisers, organised by the Friends of the School, with the expectation that all families contribute to this by either/or cooking the BBQ and providing muffins.  While this is a neat wee fundraiser for the Friends of the School, we also hear back from many of you, that you enjoy the Thursday lunch treat for your children (and also for you as parents in not having to worry about making lunches!!). Thank you to the team of people who organise this to make it happen.

Well - I can't believe that we are now in July - AND that it is the end of another term!  Take the time to enjoy your children over the holidays - and for them to be recharged for Term 3!

Happy holidays!

GOOD LUCK!
A special good luck to Sam Slee, Cassidhe Harrop and Ria Dennison who are representing Aoraki Primary Schools at the National Agri Kids final in Timaru on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  We are VERY proud of their efforts to get to the finals two years running and wish them all the best! Year 7 & 8 students, Mrs J and myself will join them in Timaru to lend our support on Friday!
Visit the Mahutonga Blog to see what they were doing in the gardens yesterday.  A big thank you to Bianca and her team at the Community Gardens who have acquired $400 worth of funding to purchase gardening tools for our garden.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR CHILDREN IN KUROW WHO TAKE RITCHIES BUSES
As a courtesy, some children who live in the town are currently being transported to school and back by Ritchies Bus Services. As from Term 3, only children under 8 years old will be eligible for this service. Children who do not regularly travel to school on a bus are not permitted at any time to travel on any of the buses.

INCREDIBLE YEARS - PARENTING PROGRAMME
The Incredible Years' Parenting Programme is being offered in Oamaru for the first time!  This programme complements the teachers' programme that Mrs Peters did last year, and that Mrs Powell and Mrs Sime are doing this year.  The Ministry of Education provide financial support for anyone requiring childcare and transport to attend the course. The programme itself is FREE!

Please call into the office to collect the information brochure and enrolment form if you are interested in more information or enrolling.  If getting there is a barrier - please let us know and we may be able to organise a ride for you.
