Waitaki Valley School

2 November 2016

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

Today, tomorrow and Friday make up a little focus for us 'Celebrating Waitaki Valley'.  Our mufti day today was in support of the Richie statue fundraising campaign, tomorrow is our Upper Waitaki Zone Athletics and Friday sees our book 'Waitaki Writes' being launched. (Information below).

There is always so much to celebrate at Waitaki Valley and our celebration week is only part of this.
  • Congratulations to Cassidhe Harrop who was acknowledged as the ODT Extra! October Poet of the Month for her poem 'Piano'.  Coincidentally Cassidhe selected this piece for her contribution to 'Waitaki Writes' - so in buying a copy of this, you will be able to read this award winning poem!
  • What an awesome effort from our Jump Jam team in Christchurch on Saturday, at the Regional Finals (South Island Champs).  The competition was fierce and unfortunately we weren't placed, however ALL of the feedback I have received has been overwhelming in regards to how wonderfully this group represented Waitaki Valley School at this high class competition.  A special mention needs to go to Miss Harriet Bremner for all the work that she put into firstly entering this team so that they were selected for the Regionals, and then the hours of work that she put in coaching them in preparation for the competition.  Thanks Harriet.
Check bags!
Coming home today with your children are order forms for our Waitaki Writes book, and complimentary sunblock tubes (see information below).  Parents of children who play touch have an additional note coming home too.  Please make sure that you retrieve these things from the bottom of school bags.

Planning for 2017
The end of year includes a lot of preparation for next year, and I'm currently in the process of juggling our numbers for classes and staffing.  We are aware of New Entrants who join us from the Pre-School, but if you know of any other Pre-Schoolers in the district who aren't at Pre-School - could you please have them make contact with us at school so that we can include them in our 'big picture'.  We like to be prepared!

End of Year Arrangements:
We are going to finish our year a little differently this year.  There will be a final 'End of Year Assembly' in the gym on Thursday December 15, that family, friends and community are all welcome to join us in.  This will then be followed by a Picnic.  We encourage you to bring your blanket and picnic basket and have lunch with your family at school.  The Board of Trustees, who usually put on a BBQ for the children a few days earlier, will instead run their BBQ at this event.  There may even be a few games to take part in!

Pool Update:
The pool preparation is on track for the pool to open at the end of next week (from the 11th).  Keys will be available to purchase from next week, in the school office.

I look forward to seeing you all at athletics tomorrow - and don't forget the book launch on Friday!

Children are to be at Twizel Area School by 9.45am.  Michelle has phoned people who needed transport and arranged for children to get to Twizel.

Teachers will take sunhats for children, and you have your sunscreen that has gone home today.  Please take sunscreen to reapply, a large lunch to replenish energy levels and plenty of water.  Children are to wear school uniform.

There will be a sausage sizzle available - $2

The Junior Programme will conclude at lunchtime, and Junior children are free to go home then.
A Collection of Writing from students at Waitaki Valley School.
This Friday at assembly (2.15pm)
All welcome
Our assembly will be led by the Teina Hub students.
Copies will be available for $10 each.  Each family will have 2 books put aside for them until Friday November 11th.  Additional copies can be purchased on a 'first in first served' basis.  Limited print.
(**Please note if athletics is postponed until Friday - the assembly will take place at 2.15pm Thursday)
Thank you to those of you who gave us feedback on our revised Charter - Vision, Values and Strategic Goals.  The feedback was resoundingly positive, so it has been great to know that those of you who took the time, feel that the direction reflects the school and it's community.  We have responded to suggestions and have made a few mainly 'cosmetic' changes and are just waiting to receive the right advice to add the Maori translation of the Vision statement on this too.
The lucky spot prize winner was: Sally Newlands
Congratulations to Ben Kay and William Smillie who have been selected in the North Otago Under 14 Boys Touch team for the Otago Trials in Balclutha this Sunday.  Well done and good luck boys!
Every child will come home today with a container of sunscreen to take to athletics in Twizel tomorrow.  Many thanks to Regan Laughton and Farmers Livestock for supplying these.
Last week we missed off Dan Patterson and William Smillie's winning entry in the writing competition.  Here it is this week . . .
10 reasons why I can't write.
  1. I hate writing!

  2. My Uncle’s dog walkers, mother’s brother’s mother’s, rabbit died.

  3. An earthquake split my book in half.

  4. What is writing?

  5. My book grew legs and dived into the sea.

  6. I am still looking for Wally.

  7. My dog died in a car accident with my Grandma.

  8. Aliens abducted my pencil case.

  9. I’m still looking for the legendary Pokemon.

  10. I’m dead!

This week’s writing challenge winner is, Grace Newlands!  She wrote about what she would do if she was Queen of the World!

If I Was Queen of the World

If I was the Queen of the world…

I would make sure that NO ONE would be able to get their hands on endangered species.  I would put an end to terrorism and war.

If I was Queen of the world…

I would donate money to the poor, so that poor countries can have the money to build schools and to have better medical supplies.

If I was Queen of the world…

I would set free, all of the animals in the zoos, so they would have freedom just like us.

If I was Queen of the world…
I would provide houses for anyone who needed them.

That is what I would do, if I was Queen!

Grace Newlands

This weeks challenge is to write a piece with 100 words, beginning with ‘hello’.  Don’t forget parents, you can enter too!!
