Waitaki Valley School

13 April 2016

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

This long and 'interrupted' term is coming to a close.  It has been one in which your children have worked hard to focus in on their learning and for them to understand what 'Aiming High' looks and feels like for them as a learner. Our teachers are working hard to ensure that your children understand their own strengths and preferences as learners.  I'm sure you will have some interesting conversations at home if you prompt a conversation about this.

Friends of the School AGM
Thank you to the people to attended our Friends of the School AGM on Monday evening.  Michael Smith shared an insight into the role of a Board of Trustees member, which I know heightened people's awareness of the value of this role in our school - for us as a school and for you as parents. Please read the information below about the upcoming elections.

At the AGM parents were also taken through the use of number of apps to support learning at school - apps that you can download and use at home.  I was impressed at how receptive everyone was to using these - and what quick learners you all were!  Many very quickly even created their own e-book.  If you are after ideas for the use of your digital devices at home don't forget to touch base with a teacher, as they will have ideas of what you can use to support your child specifically. In each newsletter we will endeavour to provide you with an app or website that can support learning - and be fun!

A BIG Thank you
I want to take this opportunity to thank Rachael Chilton, Odelle Hawkins and their VERY active and supportive Friends of the School 'team' who work tirelessly to ensure that we have a lot of support for what we do in the classrooms at school.  At the AGM this group made a generous donation to the Board of Trustees to enable a number of things to continue within our school at no cost to our families.  These things included providing all new enrolments with their new school hat and high viz vest, for all children to be able to attend visiting performers, and the Life Education programme . . . among other things.  In all schools that I have worked in previously these are all things that parents have to pay for - or their children miss out on taking part.  We really are in a privileged position. Please ensure you play your part by continuing to support this group in what they do.

Elspeth Wallace didn't stand for re-election as Treasurer.  Thank you Elspeth for your contribution to this group over a number of years.  Liesel Herbst is the new treasurer.

Literacy Holiday Challenge
Just as over the summer holidays - again we are providing a Reading and Writing Challenge for children to take part in over the upcoming holidays.  We look forward to seeing what children bring us at the beginning of Term 2 - and yes - again there will be incentives and rewards!

Happy Holidays
The move into winter is often a difficult one - bugs are more prevalent, the days are shorter, and the temperature is colder.  Please take the opportunity to ensure your children (and you!) have a good rest over the holidays.

Gaye Schurgers
Returning Officer
Congratulations to Bessie Heyes, Sophie Graham and Georgia Bell for their wins in the colouring competition at the North Otago A & P Show.  Each of the girls won a nice big bird feeder (like the one in the photo) for home!
Waitaki Bob's Adventure to the Yr 5 & 6
Rippa Rugby Tournament
On Friday the 8th of April I went down to Oamaru to watch the Rippa Rugby team that got selected to play in a tournament.  This was Caden, Hunta, Grace, Itaia, Riley, Tamati, Maddy, Maia, Lucy and Meg.

I thought it was a very fair and exciting good day out because there was a lot of cheering, encouragement and lots of generous, sporty people.

They won 2 games and lost 2.  They played St Joseph's, Weston, Glenavy and Fenwick.  I thought they were awesome!

The Warriors had great sportsmanship. Nick Chapman, the coach, was very supporting and made us all laugh.

The team got very tired by the end of the day, but overall the children enjoyed it a lot!

Written by the team!
Each week we will endeavour to bring you an app or website of the week.  The idea of these sites and apps will be to support your children to reinforce what they are doing at school.
This week's app is MATHS SHAKE.
This has a free download available that will give you limited access to the features, and then there is also a paid version that costs approximately $6.  This app is designed to meet the levels of a wide variety of mathematical capabilities - from those in early maths, to those preparing for high school.  The focus is on real world maths problems, using mathematical strategies.
A short video showing you how this works is below.
Poppies will be available at the school office for the rest of the week.

Gold coin donation.
A huge THANK YOU to all that donated their Horse Poo for us to use on the School Garden.
This will provide a nice winter coat for our garden.

Happy Gardening and Happy Holidays
