8 February 2017

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

I do hope that you had the opportunity to enjoy the long weekend and the weather that it brought.  I think  that may have been our summer!

Due to the flooding at Otematata, we have had to change our plans for the GREAT Day Out on Friday.  The wetlands walkway that we were planning on using with the Yr 1-3 children is not suitable for walking on.  Our change of plan means that we will all meet at the carpark up at the top of the Dam at 9.45am.  From here the Yr 4-8 children will walk the Observation Track and the Yr 1-3 will walk across the dam and view the spillway from the lookout, and walk back.  Once all back from our walk we will then all drive down to the Loch Laird camp area for lunch and a swim.

If you had indicated that your children needed a ride, or if you were able to take others, Mrs Jepson has sent slips home with contact information of who you are taking or who is taking your child/ren.

The buses will not run on Friday.  The weather forecast (at this stage) looks like the day may be a bit overcast - so please make sure children have warm clothes and a jacket to keep them dry.  Children will need to have their high vis vests and teachers will bring their hats.  Sunscreen will need to be packed, along with a substantial lunch and plenty of water.

If the weather does let us down, then the buses will run as usual. Any change will be on our school Facebook page, and you will be phoned through the phonetree (See information below).

Your child/ren
We continue to emphasise the relationships between us as the school, specifically the teachers, and you at home.  Thank you to those of you who have returned your yellow/cream sheets about your children.  If you haven't yet returned yours, please do so.  If you have misplaced it -please contact Michelle in the office for a replacement.  We do expect that we will get one for each child.  You can expect a phone call during the term, from the teacher/s of your child/ren.  This will be an opportunity for them to touch base with how your child/ren has started their year.  It is also an opportunity for you to ask specific questions about them and their learning.

Staff and Contacts
Below is a list of teachers and their email addresses, should you wish to make contact.  Remember that you are welcome to come and meet with teachers, in regards to your child, you just need to make an appointment at a time that suits both of you.  Next week we have our 'Meet the Teacher' evening.  This will start with our Tuakana Hub, followed by our Teina Hub outlining their programmes, expectations and how you can help.  We look forward to you joining us for this and engaging in the commitment to support your children in their learning journey for the year.

Our Board of Trustees are committed to ensuring that we can do the best job to progress our children in their learning.  A number of learning needs have been identified by our teaching staff and in line with this the Board are committing a significant financial contribution to supporting children.  As a result we have a large team of Teacher Aides this year. While these wonderful people are often working with small groups of students, or individuals, they are doing so under the direction of the teachers.  Please continue to direct any queries about your child to your child's teacher/s.  Our Teacher Aide Team consists of:
Mrs Elspeth Wallace, Mrs Melanie Milne, Mrs Liesel Herbst, Mrs Nikki Ormandy, Ms Julie Taylor, Mr Graeme Peters.  We are very fortunate to have such a strong team of support staff.

School Phone tree
With so many new families this is currently being updated. We have also had a number of families who were at the 'top' of the tree move on at the end of last year. Michelle is currently setting up an updated tree and will be making phone contact (if she hasn't already) with those of you who we will be asking to make calls.  She will be sending home updated cards to all those who are responsible for ringing families, tomorrow.

For new families - we instigate the phone tree if there have been any change of plans re buses eg an event is cancelled and the buses will run, it is snowing/flooding and the buses won't run, school is closed, or school will be starting later than usual. You will receive a call from someone to let you know what is happening.  We always endeavour to get the phone tree instigated from 7am on the morning it is required, however as I'm sure you can appreciate, in the middle of winter it can be difficult to have this done by 7am.  We always try to be as prompt as we can be.  Obviously safety is paramount and this is the basis of any decision we make - regardless of the time of the day.

Concerns and Complaints
We want to make you aware that if at any time you aren't satisfied with how we have dealt with something, then there is a formal procedure to follow.  At any time during the year you can refer to our Concerns and Complaints procedure on our website here.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our GREAT day out on Friday.

Well done to Connor Pritchard who has been selected in a NZ U14 Talent Squad for Basketball.  Connor will take part in a Training Camp in Rotorua in the next school holidays.
Nice work Caden McGregor-Hofman who was in the Otago Under 12 Mixed Touch Team who won the South Island Champs before Christmas.
Notes are going home today with Yr 5-8 girls and boys who are interested in each of these competitions.  The boys start with a game next Tuesday vs St Joseph's, and the girls on Thursday vs Weston.  Both games are in Oamaru and we require parental support.
Touch starts NEXT Tuesday (14th February).  A note will come home tomorrow with the organisation of teams, coaches and transport.  We have nearly 40 Yr 4-8 children involved in touch this year which is absolutely wonderful - however it does create a complex logistical operation in organising transport!  Thank you to all the parents who are happy to support with coaching and transport.
