PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Bob Adkins~~

December 1968 finally strapped in my seat on Braniff Airlines. Did not think I was going to make it. Spent four days in a well on an LZ on the Cambodian border. Taking a lot of B40 rockets, pinned down. I have Seven days left to DEROS then get lifted out. I had to go to base camp then to An Khe then back to Cam Ranh Bay. Running to those steps of that bird to take me back to the World.  I had a BOD meeting on the tenth of December to discuss Wreath Across America, ELB, and Fundraising.

We did a drive-by at ELB on the 22nd and discussed and passed a motion to purchase one hundred dollars of snacks for their events. We also passed a motion to have a pizza party for patients and staff at ELB On December 21st at 1400 which is the AVVA bingo date.

We passed a motion to purchase 30 large pizzas.  I said I would go to our support partner, Giuseppe Pizza, and ask for help. Low and behold Julie said She would support VVA to support ELB. Julie delivered 30 large meat pizzas. We need to support these Partners any time you're there let them know who you are. Thank You, Julie.

Discussed putting a committee together to have a giant yard sale this spring. If you can help get on  Board. We have to keep fundraising.
Wreath Across America was a great success at our cemetery that the chapter supports. We had many Veterans that belong to different veteran service organizations in attendance giving shout-outs.  Diane Schaack and the AVVA are already at work for next year's Wreath Across America. Also, we thank The Marine Corps League for the Rifle Volley Salute.

Thanks to the Cemetery workers getting it in a beautiful position, lots of great commits. Thanks to all who came out to Metro Dinner in November we are there last Wednesday in December 0900. My favorite beverage is Gravy.

As of now, we are having an e-board meeting on Jan 7th, a BOD meeting on Jan 14th, and a General Meeting on the 21st of January. Jason Althouse will be the guest speaker. If you have some questions please send me by e-mail we will get to Jason to speed it up at adk123robert@aol.com.

Carla Howe gave me a lead on an 11-year-old that needed Christmas help we stepped up with Sheldon at PMR.
The New Year is here many are glad 2020 is over and let's get a good start to a Happy and Prosperous  NEW YEAR.
Thank you for all you do for Veterans. Keep watching the CALENDAR on vva1048.com

GOOD OF THE ORDER

~~Legislation to give burial benefits to cremated veterans clears Congress

The purpose of the MIA Project is to locate, identify, and inter the unclaimed cremated remains of American veterans through the joint efforts of private, state, and federal organizations. To provide honor and respect to those who have served this country by securing a final resting place for these forgotten heroes.  The Missing in America Veterans Recovery Program (MIAP) (EIN: 20-8408832) is a Federal recognized Non-Profit Veterans Organization for the identification, location, verification, and movement of Veterans and their Dependents.

MIAP-FL had CTH #23 scheduled for December 10, 2020
at the South Florida National Cemetery. Due to inclimate weather and COVID restrictions, we had to cancel this service. Since the cremains had already been transported to the SFNC, the staff of the cemetery interred the 19 veterans and 7 spouses. MIAP will honor all during our next service.  The unclaimed cremains for this service was from the Van Orsdel Family Funeral Chapels in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department in Miami.  This MIAP-FL service included 19 veterans, and 7 spouses of veterans, as follows:

US Army – 8 veterans and 4 spouses US Marine Corps. – 1 veteran and 1 spouse US Navy – 5 veterans and 2 spouses US Air Force – 3 veterans US Coast Guard – 1 veteran US Merchant Marines – 1 veteran The veterans served in the US Army, Marine Corps., Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines during World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and other non-war specific periods. The longest that any of those to have been interred has been unclaimed is since 1952.

Our dedicated volunteers continue to work on entering cases into our database that were located before COVID 19 hit. Once all is back to normal, whatever our new normal will be we will all start reaching out to funeral homes and continue with this project. Florida currently has teams working in the following counties, Brevard, Broward County, Duval, Marion, Miami-Dade, and Polk. We will hold
another service in February again at the South Florida National Cemetery. We will follow all COVID rules for this service.

Please go to our NEWLY DESIGNED website at www.miap.us to read more about our project and find out how you can become involved with MIAP in your area. We need volunteers across the state to join our Team. You may contact me at any time at my information listed below. We also have Facebook pages for Florida and other states.

More.....VVA CHAPTER 1048 EVENTS / BLOG
All,

As I prepare this final edition of our newsletter for 2020, I reflect on the past year and the wonderful accomplishments we have achieved as a team, even during Covid-19, the drive-by ono-contact food drives, and more, we also celebrated our 10th year Anniversary!  This month also marks the loss of our founder, Joe Pizzimenti in 2018. sadly, we have lost several members this year and they will "Never Be Forgotten."  I think we can all agree that we will be glad to see 2020 go and welcome in 2021 for hopes of a better year with more action helping our fellow veterans.  Even though the vaccine is being distributed, we still must counter against this terrible pandemic.

On behalf of our chapter President, Bob Adkins, we want to thank everyone for your continued support in building our foundation for a fantastic chapter!  Thanks to you, over the years together, our chapter and members have received numerous National, State, and local awards, identifying VVA 1048 as one of the best chapters in the nation and our state, we continue to hold as the 2nd largest chapter in membership, thanks to all of you.  Also, Bob and I would like to hear from you, your ideas, suggestions for our chapter are always welcome.  Bob has lined up some great speakers.

As a reminder, please send me your profile for our segment, "Member Profile",  put together a bio about you, where you grew up, when/where you joined the military, what branch?, your MOS, civilian life, family...  Put everything, text, pictures... on a word document so I can edit for our newsletter platform and begin to learn about our fellow members.
